About Gabrielle Mathieu
Gabrielle Mathieu lived on three continents by the age of eight. She'd experienced the bustling bazaars of Pakistan, the serenity of Swiss mountain lakes, and the chaos of the immigration desk at the JFK airport. Perhaps that's why she developed an appetite for the unusual and disorienting. Her fantasy books are grounded in her experience of different cultures and interest in altered states of consciousness (mostly white wine and yoga these days). The Falcon Flies Alone is her debut novel. The Falcon Strikes is scheduled for early 2017. The series will conclude with The Falcon Soars.

Forget for a moment that I look like a frog waiting to catch a fly in the first frame (or perhaps like I’m waiting for a dab of wine). This was a fine evening with fans of the Falcon series, and a wonderful potluck to boot.
Give it a listen for a taste of the story.

Blog postHoping to get your book out there? There are three routes to publication: conventional publishing, publishing with a small press, and self-publishing. I’d like to share with you my own personal route to publishing, which involved finding a co-op press. Five Directions Press founders, from left to … Continue reading "Routes to Publication: Co-op publishing"

Blog postI’ve always been interested in buildings as whole, though I photograph mostly portals—windows and doors. Buildings are a visible externalized carapace for a person, a way of judging their social status, their hopes and aspirations, their peculiarities. Castles, of course, are more than just personal expressions. They were built to proclaim the power of their … Continue reading "Swiss Castles: A Visit to Tarasp"

Blog postPeppa’s dangerous quest to prevent further use of the lethal Compound T leads her to Ireland, where she joins an IRA splinter-group, “The Heavy Hand of the Harpist.” The genesis of the name is the alleged British historic practice of persecuting harp players in the seventeenth century. “The Heavy Hand of the Harpist” never existed, … Continue reading "The Heavy Hand of the Harpist"

Blog postThe true tragedy is that the bitter Ulstermen, those murderous Protestants that used the “Loyalist” moniker, seemed no better off than their Catholic counterparts. If they had been better off, they’d have had something to lose; as it was, the grinding wretchedness of their lives made them susceptible to manipulation, same as any poor people … Continue reading "The Conflict in Belfast"

Blog postI thought my character, Peppa, might be unlikable sometimes, until I saw Jessica Chastain portray an ambitious lobbyist in Miss Sloan. In comparison, she makes my analytical, occasionally arrogant heroine look like a cuddle-bunny. Jessica Chastain gives a galvanizing performance, all pale face and wide staring eyes, angles and porcelain. She could be the supercilious … Continue reading "Complex Heroines"

Blog postSolitude is a writer’s prerogative, and as my feet wander the earth, my brain wanders the terrain of my creations. It mostly works out. This last week was a challenge, with a painful falling-out with someone dear to me, and the supportive editor-spouse traveling to the land of his birth, to ponder on his origins and … Continue reading "The Kindness of Strangers"

The Falcon Flies Alone (Falcon Trilogy Book 1)
Jul 29, 2016
$4.99
As the sun rises on a quiet Swiss mountain village in 1957, runaway Peppa Mueller wakes up naked and stranded on the roof of her employer’s manor, with no idea how she got there. As she waits for help, she struggles to piece together fragmented memories of the previous night. Did she really witness the brutal massacre of a local family? Did she kill them? Her fear of sinister house guest Dr. Unruh fuels her panic—as do electrifying flashes of a furious falcon, trapped inside her.
Wanted for murder, Peppa flees the police, intent on finding out if there’s a scientific explanation or if she’s just going mad. Her godfather, world-renowned chemist Dr. Kaufmann, risks his career to help her. In the meantime, Peppa fights her attraction to the handsome priest from India who offers her shelter. With their help, she not only finds Dr. Unruh but places herself at his mercy. His experiments may be the reason Peppa now shares her body with a bloodthirsty bird of prey—but the revenge she plans could kill them both.
