This book is about a house, Gad Hall, and the families that lived in it. A family from the 1800's and a contemporary family. SO MUCH of this book could have been left out, and it would have been a much better read. There is an overuse of pronouns, and two of the characters have very similar names, which is SO annoying. Why? So much of this book never goes anywhere and could have been edited out. The first part of the first book is about the contemporary family. I ended up rereading that part because by the time they got back to them, I had forgotten it all. This book needed, and did not get, a good editor. A few lines about HOW Lavinia got pregnant, for instance, would have helped. Perhaps a few lines about the household generations between the old and new with some sort of mysterious death, etc, would have kept the story flowing. The use of SHE when there are five females all in the same house, very annoying. You need a chart. EVERY female character in the 1800 section has THREE names they are called in the book. A lot happens that is never explained. I would have given it TWO STARS but there where some interesting quips that I wante to keep for a quote book, so for that they get an extra star. This should have been one 300 page book. A good editor could have done that.

I had purchased this book many years ago as a teenager, my sister and I both loved this book and took turns reading and re-reading it. I lost the book, and decided to look to see if it was available on Amazon. It was! I purchased two books, one for my sister and one for me. They were in super condition. Truly a great buy!!

i purchased this book at a secondhand bookstore just by cover alone. it intrigued me. as i started reading time passed and chores didn't get done. this book is an enjoyable mystery about a woman who fights for her family's fear in the house. not going to tell the story in 15 to 20 paragraphs as some readers do and spoil the reading of the story. this is one of the good old books that you tell people about without loaning it out for fear of not getting it back. no sex, no swear words, no cussing, fighting, killing just to sell the book. just a darn good read to take along anywhere. just don't leave it in the doc's office for you will not get it back. not a harlaquin trashy book.
the story: an invalid husband and wife move to this old tudor house with their three children. events happen to bring fearful feelings to them. the wife finds out about a previous woman who lived in the tudor house and her tragic events over a century ago. the tention builds as she finds out clues to ease and solve the tragic event to bring peace to the house.

This is definitely a good read if you are into gothic novels, but it was interesting to see how little the main characters meant as time went by and the new generations moved in. Mama, Deborah, Diana, Caroline, the husbands. That's how life is. It's all so important when we are young, and then it comes to, this is all it is. It's all it ever really was. We are just bit players on this earth. Even the most recent George Thorley wasn't important. He had to let Gad's Hall go because he hadn't the money and had no children for it anyway. (We know this right from the beginning.)

"Gad's Hall" by Norah Lofts is a very enjoyable read. The book is in two parts, the first a wife with young children begins to fear her new house has something evil lurking within. We then go back in time over a century before, to see how evil came to exist in the house. All in all, very enjoyable. The first part is good with slightly sinister things happening in the house that are all too easy to dismiss. The book is not over the top, like so many "haunted" stories presented today. The second part of the book is just as good, with a widow worrying about the future and what will happen to her children, how they will manage. A very good read, and highly recommended.

Norah Lofts GAD'S HALL and THE HAUNTING OF GAD'S HALL is an early paranormal written before the term was applied to a genre of stories.
The two stories are companions and should be read in order of appearance. A family moves into an old country home that has been kept in pristine condition, but there is something in the attic that is not of this world.
Two woman from different centuries fight and struggle to keep their families together and secure. Their customs and cultures are different, but their purpose is the same.
Great reading for the midnight hours.
Nash Black, author of SINS OF THE FATHERS.
