This an amazing book full of history and knowledge. A perfect addition to any Nautical Library. They don't 'em like they used to! (That goes for Ships AND Good Books)

Nice book on gaff rigging.

A good reference for building, restoring and sailing Gaff Rigged boats. I used it often while I was restoring a small, gaff-rigged cutter. Obscure topics were a little less obscure with the Gaff Rig Handbook nearby.

John Leather's book "The Gaff Rig Handbook" is an extraordinary good book showing both technical and typological aspects of the amazing gaff rig.
I specially like the very worthful sketches that illustrate things in a easy to understand way.
In the second part of the book John Leather explaines about all kind off different craft that used the gaff rig in many different corners of our world.
For me this book will help me to understand and adjust an existing rig concept on a classic wooden gaff cutter that I'm going to build in 2012.

The author is an expert in the subject of the text and takes the reader through the evolution, demise and rebirth of the rig over a period of more than 300 years. the text is well written and is a must read for anyone interested in the gaff rig in particular or sailing history in general. It is and will remain one of the primary references on the subject.

Still Excellent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 14, 2010Verified Purchase
Although this is an updated version of John Leather's Gaff Rig from the 1970's it has lost none of its original information presented with charm. It is still llustrated with useful diagrams for the owner of a traditional sailing boat but these seem to be smaller than the original (perhaps it's my eyes and anno domini!) and so may not be as useful. It is classily printed in softback and would grace a yacht's library and coffee table. Makes an ideal present for someone with an interest in the history of sailing or the owner of a gentleman's classic yacht.

Very Comprehensive Study
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 28, 2013Verified Purchase
One could not hope for a more exhaustive study on Gaff Rigging. So exhaustive that a lot of it is quite beyond me but of course one can sift out the parts one wants and be fully informed.
