Launch + Rise Workouts 1 and 2Launch (1) = Start off strong with the basics to build up endurance, agility, balance and core strength. Level 1 of a BODYSHRED is far harder than any of Jillian's level 3 workouts I've done. I struggled at first, but quickly increased stamina as the weeks progressed, sticking to the program without problem. I was feeling strong, after the first month, starting to see some great results, but half-way through week 5, I suffered an injury. (Curse those one legged burpees!!) I recovered and got back into it, only to get injured again. (This time it was my wrist from the one-armed burpees). I slowly recovered and started it back up a second time, only to injured a third time (Yet another different part of the body). That's when I had to call it quits. Three injuries to three completely different areas of the body had to be a sign.
I love Jillian and her workouts, but things get a bit insane by workouts 5 & 6. If you're in great shape already, I'd say go for this workout. If you're a beginner, I'd say STAY AWAY until you've built up your fitness level quite a bit. If you're somewhere in between like me, then do this workout at your own risk.
That being said, I think workouts 1-4 and the two cardio dvds are great workouts to do on their own, even if you're not following the programs 6 days per week. I still use these workouts added to my regular workout regime for those days I need a little extra challenge. (And believe me, you will seat, you will pant for breath, and your muscles will burn like a mother.) But in my opinion, workouts 5+ are just insane in an unnecessary way and may make you vulnerable to injury.
It pains me to say this as a Jillian fan of many years...but I'm not wild about this program.
I am in good shape. I'm young. I've exercised regularly at high and low intensity for the past six years. I'm lean and healthy. I eat well. I sleep enough. I stretch. I train 4-6 days a week. I'm also into hiking and yoga, with a budding interest in running.
For me, though, this program as written is just too much.
I like the strength training days, for the most part. There's a lot of high praise to be given for those. I've always liked Jillian's 3-2-1 system. You're never stuck on one exercise for too long, and it keeps things interesting. You definitely feel these workouts, and they DO work. I get why people like this program. I really do.
I've tried four times to get through it in the 3.5 years I've owned it, and every time I try, even though I always make it five to seven weeks, I end up injured in some way.
(And no, my form is not wrong. I'm meticulous about form.)
I think the problem stems from how hard this program is on the body. My particular gripe is with the cardio days. Sorry, Jillian - I get that it's supposed to be tough, and I'm never one to run from a challenge - but you aren't "resting" my already-shot muscles if the cardio exercises frequently involve lunging, squatting, planking, etc. Jillian is capable of cardio that doesn't do this; I know because I have all her other programs. The fatigue just builds up from day after day of burning out the same muscles, and after a few weeks, I always feel like literal trash.
I've wrenched my neck and/or tweaked something in my back at some point every time I've tried this program, forcing me to stop or postpone workouts. I'm young, and I'm fit! This is insane. I always end up feeling like I've been mowed down by a truck somewhere between three and five weeks into the program, and not in that good, I've-just-had-a-killer-workout way. It's just a bad, achy-joint, I-can't-move kind of way that makes it difficult to function in the rest of my life.
I should add that I had to add quite a bit of my own stretching after workouts, because several of the cooldown sequences are just sad. Rushed. Brief. An obvious afterthought. Really disappointing. Stretching is so important to prevent injury, and I'm surprised it was so limited in an intensive program like this.
Otherwise, maybe I'm just not strong enough. Maybe my body needs more rest. I haven't ruled out the possibility that maybe I'm the problem, so to speak. But I do a lot of tough workout videos, with Jillian being one of my favorites, and I just haven't had this issue with other programs.
Also, weeks 3 and 4 are just the most horrible, unpleasant workouts I've ever done. I like the rest of them. But those weeks were AWFUL for me. Every single time I did those workouts, they were just grueling in a miserable, punishing sort of way. (Weeks 5 and 6 gave me new life after that... definitely appreciated. I will never, ever do workouts 3 or 4 again. I hate them. Every exercise is more miserable than the last. And I'm not a quitter... I can put myself through a lot of pain. But for whatever reason, not those. Never again.)
I think my solution is to occasionally incorporate some of the strength training workouts from this program into a more balanced routine.

To anyone else who reads this: get this programme, it is fantastic! Believe me, I’m still not super fit, and I’m not a fitness junkie type, far from it!, but my body just works so well now. If it works for me, it will for you :-)
