Note: the author seems to be moving into episodic sequels unfortunately. I hope he will soon write a full length novel instead.
So Cy embarks on a series of adventures across the galaxy, curing plagues, outwitting corrupt planetary government officials, and falling for a beautiful off-world veterinarian. Always with the burning questions in mind: Why was he, a known dissident, chosen for this mission? What is the true purpose of the mission? Can he navigate what becomes a stickier web of intrigue with every light year traveled without tripping up and getting his family imprisoned, tortured,...or worse?
Cy is accompanied by his arch nemesis, the thinly veiled government spy Rebbe Levi, and the large, very capable Furoletto “Fur” Cohen, who has secrets of his own. Cy is a hothead and can’t seem to keep himself from antagonizing the equally volatile Levi, and Fur is often cast in the role of peacemaker between them.
It soon becomes clear to Cy that his own government suffers from a well-deserved public image problem from a previous failed attempt at a military backed invasion of some surrounding planets. It also becomes clear to he and Fur that Levi’s secret mission is to seek intelligence and plant sleeper agents on these other planets for a future planned second attempt. (This is no spoiler, it’s revealed fairly early in the book.)
After the initial set-up, the book settles into a somewhat episodic series of adventures chapter-to-chapter while advancing the overarching plot with each new planet visited. Parts of this book put me in mind of L. Ron Hubbard’s Mission Earth series, while other parts were reminiscent of Keith Laumer’s intrepid interstellar diplomat, Jame Retief. There is humor, action, intrigue, romance, and aliens.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It is well-paced and the idea of an interplanetary veterinarian is, as far as I can tell, an entirely original one. And frankly it was just plain fun to read! The book can sometimes get pretty far down into the weeds of medical science, for those who like that sort of thing, and also has plenty of other scifi elements to please hard-core adventure fans. I don’t recall much in the way of profanity or other adult topics so this would be a great read for kids as well.
I really enjoyed this book, and I know you will too. I highly recommend it.
This book has humor, romance, travel, intrigue, and some of the most imaginative alien cultures I've read about in a long time. Well done, Mr. Benjamin! I look forward to more from you in the future.
religious police state, otherwise a lot like Murray Leinster's Med Series but for animals, with an empath Vet. I look forward to more adventures and see how he resolves his conflict with the sentience of the oxen.
