That aside, I also very much enjoyed the other two stories, "The Nighthawk Star" and "Signal and Signal-less." I had not read either before, and they were very much in what I think of as the Miyazawa style. Both of them have the underlying theme of his dislike of social prejudice and egotism. They also have the "other-worldliness" that he is a real master of, somewhat similar to certain writings of George McDonald. It is a style that very few are good at, but Miyazawa is definitely a master. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys extremely well written fantasy (of the Little Prince type, not Conan the Barbarian).
The translation here is exquisite and definitely one of the best versions of this story in English to date.
Also included is The Night Hawk Star, a story about an ugly bird that wants to become a literal star, and Signals, a story about two train signals in love. These two stories are also very wonderful.
"The Night-Hawk Star" reads like a fable or a myth, following an ostracized and melancholy bird as he dreams of becoming something far more than he is. "Signal and Signal-less" is an odd but enchanting love story between two railroad signals, and how they manage to find a connection despite the obstacles in their path. And the title story, "Night on the Galactic Railroad," follows two boys as they view a surreal and fantastic world from aboard a train traveling along the Milky Way.
The first two stories are fairly simple, but still unique and enchanting. The third story feels rife with symbolism, vivid and fantastic imagery, and a profound message about happiness and enjoying life as long as you have it. The language feels a little clunky and awkward -- though it's hard to know whether this is the fault of the author or of the translator -- but the world woven is still one of wonder and profound melancholy, and while I'm still struggling with some of the symbolism, it was still a beautiful read.
"Night on the Galactic Railroad" can be a confusing read, and this translation feels somewhat wooden... but I'm still very glad to have taken this journey with the author. For those who loved "The Little Prince," "Night on the Galactic Railroad" will suit your tastes.
