I ended up reading all kinds of reviews and narrowed it down to 6 different protectors. I ended up buying all 6 to see which I liked better. I really wanted to buy a glass protector to try, but pretty much all of them had stories of them just cracking. My conclusion was that the curves on the glass ones either are not precise enough, the variance on the phones is too great for a hard protector to work or some other factor I am not getting. But in any event, I decided that the current technology really does allow a good glass protector for the curved edge S7 Edge. I felt that it had to be a pliable protector to stand a chance of molding and staying on, so all 6 of these are the flexible, non glass type. They also were some of the highest rated protectors.
The 6 I bought were the following:
1. ILLUMI AquaShield Full Coverage Screen Protector for Galaxy S7 Edge HD Clear Anti-Bubble Film
2. Armorsuit MilitaryShield - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector
3. Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector [ Not Glass],Yootech [Full Coverage][Case Friendly]
4. Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector, Skinomi TechSkin (2-Pack,Case Friendly)
5. Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector, IQ Shield LiQuidSkin Full Coverage Screen Protector for Galaxy S7 Edge HD
6. Spigen Curved Crystal Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector with Crystal Film 3 Pack for Galaxy S7 Edge
The most intriguing was the Spigen. It says curved crystal, but it is actually a plastic film that is curved. I thought it would be the best compromise. A flexible plastic but still molded curved. It turned out to be the worst by far of all six. It simply did not fit properly. It only would stick on one edge or the other. I had seen others say the same in reviews but I still liked the idea so much and there were enough good reviews that I still wanted to try it. It really is a waste of money. I am returning it
The next one I tried was the Skinomi. I had had good luck with their products in the past and thought this would be a good bet. The Protector was too small in my opinion. It was too short and it also was not wide enough. Its edges were in the middle of the curve and my fingers always felt them. I did not like it. The film felt good and adhered well, but it did not fit well. I am also returning that one.
After seeing the lack of fit, I measured the width on the second screen protector. It was about 71mm. I measured the rest and found that the AquaShield and the Armorsuit were even smaller at 70mm. I know if I did not like the feel of 71mm, I was not going to like 70, so I am just saying that they do not fit properly and am returning them. They really need to be wider to cover properly.
This leaves the last two – the IQShield and the Yootech.
The Yootech had the highest ratings and it did not disappoint. It did not go all the way to the very edge, but it was very close. I could not feel where it ended with my fingers. Probably with fingernails, but that is not how you use the edge. You have your finger run across or touch it on the curved part and for all intents and purposes, it was full width. The cloth was made out of a material that cleaned the screen and the protector well. It gave you some dust stickers and an alcohol cleaning pad. The openings were cut well. The protector did not go all the way around the openings, but it went up to them and surrounded them. I do recommend this protector. The adhesive was aggressive and it sent on the easiest. The only nits I have to pick is that the material is not the hardness that some of the others were. I can’t say it feels gummy, but just not has hard as some of the others. It probably needs to be to stick so well. The other nit is that because of the softness, it is easier to trap bubbles under it. I have two very small ones. I can take it off and re-apply but they are too small to really worry about it. My theory is that since the material is softer, the plastic does not help to push out the bubbles as well. You really have to be meticulous and make sure all the bubbles are gone.
The last was the IQ Shield. It measured 73mm and truly went edge to edge. The material is harder than the Yootech and I like the feeling better, but it shows fingerprints too easily. Kind of like a greasy residue even when you have just washed your fingers. The cloth they give you is not as good as Yootechs. When I cleaned the screen with it, it remained hazy. Then I used the Yootech cloth and it was clean. It takes more patience to install this one because it is harder and you have to keep coaxing the edges down until it finally dries. It goes right to the very edge and that is good, but I am also worried that there may not be enough play when I put on a case and it may lift. There is no alcohol pad or dust stickers, but the fit is the best and the openings go all the way around what they are protecting. The nits on this one are that the screen really gets hazy quick and will be a chore to constantly keep clean. It is also a recommended protector.
I am going to buy a few cases and see how the IQ Shield and the Yootech can withstand them. That will tell me which one I really want, but I think these two are the cream of the crop today. Picking a protector for this phone is a chore and I took the time to do this hoping that it might help someone.
Galaxy S7 Edge Screen Protector, IQ Shield LiQuidSkin Full Coverage Screen Protector for Galaxy S7 Edge HD Clear Anti-Bubble Film - with
The negative reviews for this screen protector aren't entirely fair. Unfortunately screen protectors are simply difficult to install unless you have had a lot of practice, and the edge screen makes it even more difficult to apply correctly. If you aren't experienced with installing screen protectors, I wouldn't expect your first attempt to be successful. Even with a lot of practice, you won't have success 100% of the time. Also one star reviews due to screen cracking are kind of ridiculous since these soft screen protectors are intended to prevent minor scratches and scuffs only. Hard, tempered glass screen protectors provide a little bit of protection against cracks, but I felt like it would be very difficult to install one on an edge screen especially if I wanted to put a case on the phone.
Personally I have a slight preference towards dry install screen protectors, because it seems a little easier to get an absolutely perfect install. But a wet install screen protector like IQ Shield is much more forgiving and I can usually get more than satisfactory results (with any flaws being extremely minor and virtually impossible to detect with screen on). With dry install you rarely have more than one shot to get it right, but wet you can move it around a little after applying and have a much better chance of quickly removing and re-applying if needed.
When installing the IQ Shield screen protector for the Galaxy S7, I did in fact have some concerns that the edges weren't completely even on both sides right after applying and it would no longer slide (don't have much time to slide before it sticks too much to move). It is a full coverage screen protector and if you have even the tiniest sliver of it going past the edge of the screen at any point it will peel up quickly at least eventually peel. You must make sure all edges of the screen protector are just within the edge of the screen. I actually did not want the "case friendly" version as I was much more concerned with fingers frequently gliding across the edge of the screen protector pulling it up than I was about putting a case on it. I am definitely happy with my choice as carefully applying the case definitely does not affect the screen protector at all (the case I got is the Spigen Neo Hybrid).
Anyway the reapply resulted in perfect positioning and I was very happy with the end result. This was a screen protector I applied five days ago to my mom's new Galaxy S7 Edge while she was in town visiting. So I can't review long term usage and can't compare to other screen protectors for this phone, but I have used another IQ Shield screen protector for 1 to 2 years with no problems at all. This screen protector seems just as high quality as the other.
Now for some help getting this installed properly...
First, of course watch their installation video and make sure you fully understand the steps before installing. From the point you peel off the screen protector you have very little time to apply if you don't want dust to stick to the screen. At least with wet installs you may have some chance to remove dust if necessary, but attempting to remove any dust will reduce your chances of the screen protector looking great after installation. So be prepared to install immediately after peeling it off.
My success rate installing screen protectors improved considerably after I started applying in a steamy bathroom. I let a hot shower run for a few minutes which helps pull the dust out of the air. This is more important for dry install screen protectors, but I'd definitely still recommend a steamy room for wet installs if possible.
Having a blow dryer or heat gun is very helpful for wet installs, and with a curved Samsung Edge screen I'd say it is almost essential. Even with some heat applied, I always at least leave the phone sitting off and untouched overnight, if not 24 hours as is recommended in the instructions for any wet install screen protector.
For this S7 Edge install, I removed the phone from the steam filled bathroom after applying the screen protector to everything but the edges and using the included squeegee to push out any bubbles . You won't be able to get the edges to stick until they dry a little bit, so the steam unfortunately will make that process longer. As I mentioned before, make sure you carefully inspect the edges of the screen protector to be completely within the screen's edges before proceeding though. If not very quickly pull off, re-spray, and reapply.
I really did not want to risk dust getting inside the edges of the screen protector if I waited several minutes as the instructions say. So I used the heat gun to apply just enough heat to dry the edges enough to stick (maybe 5 or 6 seconds with the heat gun on low at a time about one foot from the phone) and then held a portion of the edge down with my fingers for like 10 seconds. I had to do it in sections as one entire side wasn't going to stick at once. So start on one end of the middle and then repeat (apply heat and then pressure) until the sides are sticking. You will likely have to spend extra effort on the corners and some tiny spots on the edge where it didn't fully stick. That extra effort to make sure it is permanently attached everywhere will help keep it from peeling in the future. In addition to the edges, you might as well apply a little bit of heat to the rest of the screen protector as well. But there is definitely such thing as too much heat so don't overdo it. Good to just help out the process a little before letting it sit for many hours.
If you have no or nearly no experience installing screen protectors, don't get discouraged by your first attempt going poorly. You might even order two if you are worried and wouldn't want to wait for another to arrive if the first attempt goes poorly. Screen protectors like this one are very cheap relative to the value of your phone.
