Editorial Reviews
Review
. . . Have I got the book for you. Santa Claus, take note. . . . The arrival of a new volume by Joseph Epstein, whether a single-subject book or a collection of his essays or short stories, is an event. . . . I consider Epstein to be the finest essayist and columnist on active duty today. . . . William F. Buckley Jr. . . . called Epstein “perhaps the wittiest writer alive.” And the late WFB Jr. certainly knew from witty. . . . Go ahead. Treat yourself. -- Larry Thornberry ― The American Spectator, October 13, 2020

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Not the best value for the money. I do not appreciate this author's writing style nor his "voice". 1/5 stars, would not recommend.

There was no humor in this book. Just poorly written nonsense.

I always look for forward to yet another collection of Epstein’s essays. I had high expectations for Gallimaufry. And thus I am saddened to say that after ordering and downloading on Kindle I could just bare manage to read any of the essays. Something is very wrong with formatting. Returned it immediately. Only safe thing to do is go with hardcover.

I can think of thousands upon thousands of other ways to throw your money away. But you'll always get money. It's the lost time that may never be recovered from this unpromising drivel.

Joseph Epstein is neither a pundit nor a polemicist; he would certainly object to being called a political writer. What he is most of all, as he has shown in his previous books and essay collections, is a spokesman for culture in its highest and deepest sense. His subjects range from literature to philosophy to music to homely topics like cats and baseball. Mr. Epstein’s style, a thing of grace and beauty, combines erudition with a Robert-Benchley-like bewilderment and self-deprecation that welcome the reader as a fellow traveler. He is never dry, pedantic, or academic. Even when he criticizes, it is with a mordant wit and never a nasty edge. Today's writers could take a lesson from him in prose style. Having enjoyed his previous book on charm, I started reading this book yesterday and couldn't put it down. Bravo again, Mr. Epstein!

I bought the Kindle edition. Epstein's first essay is "The Bookish Life" where he states clearly that he prefers to read paper books rather than pixel books, and elsewhere comments on the differences between reading a real book with paper and a book sold through Amazon Kindle. So....I am somewhat bemused by the fact that the Kindle edition is a complete disaster in terms of formatting and has an overwhelming number of typos and punctuation errors. I am not sure if it is Epstein's Dark Humor ("You should have bought my hardcover edition..."" or Amazon's sweet revenge on Epstein for his comments. In any case, Eptesin's substance, as always, is 5 Star and the Kindle Edition here barely makes 1 Star-- hence the 3 star rating.

What a pity that those who seek to suppress sales of this delightful book haven’t taken the time to read Mr. Epstein’s latest compendium of thoughts, observations and ruminations. The book is packed with wit and charm, and one puts it down with the feeling that you’ve spent time with a treasured elder.
I’m truly sorry for those who chose to write fraudulent one star reviews in an effort to discourage others from buying the book. They have missed out on an opportunity to learn a bit about life and perhaps broaden their minds.
I should note that in my Kindle copy there are none of the formatting issues mentioned in earlier reviews.

The content is a delight; with any collection of Epstein's essays, that's a given. If there's a better essayist working today, I don't know who that is.
Update-Dec 3 2020. From the 'look inside' sample, the Kindle formatting issue appears to have been fixed. Axios Press emailed me this morning to say the problems were being handled.
And another update-Dec 3 2020. The corrected edition is available now.
