As one of the early 80's major R&B/soul male teen vocalists,DC bred Johnny Gill first became noted for his Narada Michael Walden produced duets with fellow traveller Stacy Lattisaw. Both were young soul singers with great big voices. The deep, husky baritone of Gill's has always evoked the Teddy Pendergrass's and Eddie LeVert's of the music world for me. And I admire Gill's vocal chops tremendously. Whether as New Editions final member or his subsequent solo career? I never actually managed to listen to and review any of his albums I have access to. This new album, his first in four years and only the seventh he's even made, seemed like a great place to start.

"Your Body" has an easy grooving mid tempo Philly type melodic soul attitude about it. "Behind Closed Doors" and "Can't Keep My Hands Off You" are more Minneapolis/Prince style electronic based epic ballads. New Edition show up for "This One's For You And Me"-featuring Gill and Bobby Brown trading leads on another string laden Philly style number with a strong melody. "What Is This" is an organ and guitar led Southern Soul ballad-full of Gill's gospel styled power. Same goes for the somewhat sleeker title song-yet still with the same down home flavor. "50000 Miles" the upbeat "You Choose Me" both have sleekly bouncing rhythmic power about them. "Strung Out" and "Role Play" are both bass and electric piano driven boogie/post disco/funk delights while "Gonna Cost" presents a more mid tempo ballad variation on that sound.

Only the repetitive Eurodance electronic techno styled "Guinevere" pulls the album down only one notch for me. Just feel that musically it's not really the best fit to Gill's vocal approach and style at all.

What a GREAT album! Only one COMPLETE miss on this one. Thank God it's the last song on the album "Guinevere"....what was he thinking??
I can understand that modern R&B artists like to make a trip to dance-music, but does it really have to sound that outdated?? If he really wanted to do this (and I can't understand why, his loyal fanbase is probably not into that!) he should have hired a big shot DJ like Afrojack or Armin van Buuren!! Well..enough complaining about this..let's go to the good stuff... The rest of the album is pure R&B magic for the grown and sexy.

The first song sounds like a track he could have done with LSG, followed by the superb track "Behind Closed Doors". He continues that winnning streak with a song he recorded with New Edition. Best track on this album for me is the beautiful "What is This". A perfect slow jam to enjoy with your wife (or whomever you choose to slowdance on this ;))

Unlike his previous album this one is not just slow-jams, but contains a couple of decent mid and up tempo jams as well. Most songs have a 70's/80's soul,R&B and sometimes even disco ( i.e.Role Play) feel to it. His voice is still strong as ever and puts him in a class of his own. I strongly suggest you give this a try. A feel good cd you will play for years to come ......just skip the last track :P (I forgive you mr.Gill haha)

Johnny Gill's last album Still Winning had sort of lowered the bar where my expectations were concerned. It was decent, but not memorable in the way his first two post-New Edition solo albums were.

As each of the releases ... BEHIND CLOSED DOORS and GAME CHANGER came out my reaction to those songs were ... hmmm ... Johnny Gill can still crank out a decent R&B ballad ... his chronological age has definitely caught up that grown man voice he's had since he was a teenager ... and his material has certainly matured even if it ain't as instantly memorable as his older stuff was.

Then I heard THIS ONE'S FOR ME AND YOU when it came out a couple of months ago. The song immediately stayed in my head. I thought it was a brand new New Edition release. Come to find out it was on a year-old Johnny Gill album that had been released late in 2014!!

Mind you I had already purchased GAME CHANGER and BEHIND CLOSED DOORS months ago when they first came out. But neither of those cuts were memorable enough IMO ... or received enough radio airplay ... to make me want to sample the rest of the album for purchase.

As luck would have it, THIS ONE'S FOR ME & YOU is an album only purchase on Amazon, so I bought the rest of the album at a reduced price on the strength of that song.

I have to say I'm glad I finally purchased the whole album and can enjoy the other songs.

WHAT IS THIS ... hearkens back to Al Green's organ based HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART ... even though the theme of WHAT IS THIS is much happier.

ROLE PLAY ... instantly brings to mind Johnny Gill's uptempo classics RUB YOU THE RIGHT WAY ... and FAIRWEATHER FRIEND! Matter of fact ...
