Although I somehow missed book two in Fandom Hearts, this third installment still worked as a stand-alone as well as part of a series.
Kyla and her brother own a mechanic's shop. But when Billy breaks his arm and expects Kyla not only to take up the slack but to defer her dream of staying a costuming business, she finds another solution. Jericho left town nine years ago, and has been drifting around the country doing custom motorcycle builds and mechanic work. But when Kyla asks him for help, he's willing to go back to Snoqualmie for a short break. But the Machinists, the motorcycle club he's been with since he left, need him too.
I loved the chemistry between Kyla and Jericho. They were both great characters, but they made each other better. The sex is well written and steamy.
The dialog is snappy, and peppered with pop culture references. As a geek, I love this series because the women are just like me and I can relate to them so well. And what good is a romance if you don't find a way to connect with the leads?
The side characters are also well fleshed out, and even having missed a book, I was able to see the connections and get a glimpse into their backstories. I appreciate, even as a side character, that there is someone with severe agoraphobia who isn't pitied or seen as someone to fix. There's also a gender fluid character who is similarly just accepted as they are.
Whether as part of the series or a standalone, I recommend this book.
Jericho has not stepped foot in Snoqualmie Washington in years. Occasionally he has seen his best friend, Kyla's brother but when Kyla calls for help he heads home. He knows the timing is not the best as his club is talking about expansion but the Summers have always been there for him. Seeing Kyla though throws him for a loop, he wants her but she is off limits or is she?
You had me at biker vs geek. This was a slow build romance story that swept me off my feet. Jericho you can visualize and has a confidence about him that just radiates through the story. Loved Kyla she is quirky and such an interesting character. You pick this book up and you don't put it down until it is finished. Excellent read.
This story features a plus size heroine who is smart, sassy, and SKILLED. Like, runs an auto mechanic business by day and makes award winning cosplay ensembles by night. The hero is the PNW's Native American nod to Jason Momoa, and he's totally swoon-worthy without being an alpha-hole. The two of them feel like people I would meet in real life. I don't have to suspend my knowledge of the real world or expectations of real humans. They are fabulous, but also flawed, and I want to be friends with the ladies in this series in real life.
Jericho and Kyla's friendship was so cute and I loved the outrageous, fake flirting they would do in front of Billy just to drive him crazy. Of course, that fake flirting doesn't feel so fake now that they're older and the attraction between them is so much stronger. Kyla has always had a crush on Jericho but seeing him again shows her how much her heart could end up broken when Jericho leaves again. Even with that knowledge, Kyla takes the chance to go after what she wants, and I really enjoyed seeing her feel empowered in her own skin. Kyla has so much fire and passion inside but she's been suppressing so much of it in order to make other people's dreams come true first. She had me rooting for her through the whole book and I was cheering internally every time Kyla stood up for herself.
Just like the other books in the series, Game of Hearts was wonderfully nerdy! I really liked the inside look at cosplay because it's not something I've ever really been involved in. Cathy Yardley's authenticity of the nerd world always shines through and this series just keeps getting better and better.
