As the new head coach of the Vancouver Orcas, Matt Shore has got his work cut out for him. Coming off a season where the Orcas came in last in the entire AHL, Matt’s job is to whip his new hockey team into shape for the oncoming season.
He doesn’t need any distractions, especially not one in the form of a tall, dark, and gorgeous antiques dealer.
Who’s also his ex—and his best player’s father.
Pierce Langley-Brown has a lot of regrets. The biggest? Leaving Matt behind two years ago when his son needed him. Now, with his son on Matt’s hockey team, there’s no avoiding the man who once owned his heart.
Not that Pierce wants to avoid him. And that heart? It still belongs to Matt.
But will Matt choose to keep it after all this time?

This is a sweet, heartwarming story about second chances, redemption, and overcoming mental health struggles. Matt Shore, new head coach of the AHL team the Orcas, is nursing a broken heart and bruised after a series of failed short-term relationships when his old flame, Pierce Langley Brown, comes back to town, bringing with him the added complication of being the father of one of Matt’s star players. Pierce ended things abruptly in a storybook romance during a messy divorce and a mental health crisis, and Matt doesn’t know if he’ll be able to trust him again, but he can’t seem to resist the charming antiques dealer and the history they share together.
I felt that Matt was a little too quick to forgive and give Pierce full access to his life after ruining his trust, but mostly I felt this was a sweet romance that sensitively handled Pierce’s mental health issues. I just thought Pierce needed to prove himself more. But I was quick to fall in love with both these characters, too, and the way that the author fleshed out the side characters in their lives. Thought it was refreshing that the sex scenes weren’t that graphic or detailed and it was more about character development and the growth of their relationship.
I’d definitely read more of this author’s work.
Matt starts his new job completely unaware that one of his new players recently traded is the son of his ex-since their relationship suddenly ended two years ago, he’s had a hard time getting back on his feet regarding finding someone. Pierce heads back to Vancouver aware that he will be dealing with Matt and finally having to come clean about everything that happened and what caused his sudden disappearance an breakup.
I really love the idea of second chances as a romance trope. I appreciated that Pierce’s reasons for ending the relationship were family motivated and also involving his mental health. But he’s working on it and finding ways to improve and that was something I could respect from a character. I loved Matt’s fierce protective side that surfaced - I won’t give anything away but he was willing to stand up for someone he truly cared about and let the chips fall where they may.
I am lookin forward to the other books in the trilogy. I have enjoyed the peeks we have gotten of Charlie’s character from the harsh treatment he received from Melnik in the prior series to the glimpses of possible storyline pieces in this one. I have my theory about his love interest in the next one. As for Dorian’s story, I will be waiting to see what comes for that story!
GAME PLAN is the first book in the Vancouver Orcas series.
Pierce Langley-Brown thought he had found his person in Matt Shore, an ex hockey player turned coach. But hasn't had the best relationship with his son. After he and his wife divorced his ex-wife filled his sons head with lies about him which caused his son to push him from his life. After his son had a non life threatening car accident Pierce's life fell apart around him. The only thing he could focus on was his son, not his relationship with Matt, while a dark depression came over him. Giving up everything and moving to be closer to his son and repair that relationship was all he could do until a friend said he should go to therapy.
Two years ago Pierce walked out of Matt's life he never expected for him to show up at the rink when his best player passes out from the flu. Matt was angry when Pierce just left and he still holds some of that resentment. But seeing him all these months later has the feelings he's carried for Pierce flooding to the surface. Can Matt trust that Pierce won't leave again? Can he trust him with his heart again?
This is a new to me author and I really enjoyed this. Matt and Pierce have such a complicated history and their chemistry is still so strong. I loved seeing them come back to each other and Pierce finally getting a real relationship with his son. I am invested in this series and can't wait to see what's next.

I adored Matt and my heart totally went out to Pierce.
I loved everything about this book. The characters, the setting, the pacing of the writing. Everything is just perfect.
Plus, I got the illustrated cover paperback, and the cool illustrations of the book scenes are just the cutest!
