I'm reviewing this 4 years after I purchased it. When I got it, I redeemed the digital code so I could put the box set on display and never have to worry about using the discs. That was a mistake. Last week when I was cataloging my collection, I went through each season of discs and discover that I was missing one (season 4 disc 3). I'm still kicking myself for not looking over everything as soon as I got it. Oh well, you live and learn. It's WAY to late for me to get a replacement, but hopefully I can help someone else out who might end up ordering this.

I also have to say this is a BEAUTIFUL product.

This collection, beautifully encapsulated in a wooden box, is an absolute treasure to any fanatic of the HBO hit-series "Game of Thrones". This review will be strictly about the collection, not the show. I refuse to give this a negative review simply because of one poorly-handled season.

The collection itself is bigger than it appears in promo images and likely won't slide into your media library, being roughly 4-inches longer in depth than the standard media case. With some larger shelves or bookcases, you may be able to fit this dragon-sized case in with the rest. For myself and most others, it'll serve as a nice display piece. The most striking part of the set are the nine individual cutouts that house each season plus a set of bonus features. The art on each is an original creation crafted by artist Robert Ball (responsible for the Beautiful Death series). When housed in the wooden shadow box, the cutouts create a menagerie of House sigils and events from the show that serves as a striking image to gaze upon.

Each cutout holds four discs, two on the front and two on the back. On the final three cutouts, only one disc is stored on the back. For those concerned with quality, the cutouts are not cardboard like most collector sets nowadays. Instead, they are crafted from a sturdy foamboard to prevent bending and creases. The sleeves themselves holding the discs, however, are made from typical cardboard paper. In my set, I experienced some folds and even a small tear on a cutout's disc sleeve (likely from mismanaged packing). Each cutout is labeled with a faux leather tab on the spine, so you can easily find the season you're looking for while also providing an easy method of retrieval.

The discs themselves were not scratched or damaged, nor marked with glue dots like Marvel's Infinity Saga collection was. They are of course, Blu-ray only with a digital code included for all eight seasons. The shadow box, as mentioned, is made from wood with gold foil lettering and gouges carved into the box to simulate sword slashes. The cutouts inside the shadow box are bound shut with a single faux leather strap. The strap is then pinned in place with a Hand of the King pin. The pin itself is metal, which pleased me as I expected plastic. The actual opening for the pin to slide inside of the strap was very tight, likely a sign that the leather needs to conform to its shape first. After repeated uses, it should prove easier to insert. The strap itself is a little stiff and cumbersome at first to close, making it something not quite as elegant as one would expect.

The collection also includes a card from HBO, thanking you for your purchase and brief instructions to care for the set. If one wishes, there are plastic slides included to protect the shadow box window where the cutout menagerie is featured. This is likely to shield from smoke, dust and the like, but the cutouts are clearer to see if you remove them. I found the thanks pleasant, as most companies don't bother with such a formality.

Altogether, I was highly pleased with this set. I held off for nine years on being GoT on media, as I figured they'd release a grand collection at the finale. I have to say, this was definitely worth the weight and price. Aside from a few minor damages your set might face during packaging, this set is perfect and I couldn't ask for anything else; aside from some 4K discs in the future.

Similar to many of the comments on this item, I also did not enjoy season 8. I also feel like it ruined what could have been the best TV show of our generation. With that said, this is suppose to be the section reviewing the collector's edition blu ray of game of thrones and not rotten tomatoes/imdb on how we feel all about season 8. Many of the reviews on this product does a disservice to the actual item being purchased.

Let's all be really honest with ourselves for one moment. How often do you regret purchasing collector's edition? I will fully admit that I often have a little buyer's remorse upon receiving the item. It always looks so amazing in the pictures and when you finally get it, it's plastic painted into wood/metal and flimsy cardboard. Half the extra items will get lost or trashed within a few weeks. This collector's edition is not that. This should be the standard of all collector's edition.

When I received this item, I was shocked at how big of a box it came in. HBO packaged the collector's edition very well to account for any possibility of poor packaging of the distributor. The most surprising thing, however, was how HEAVY this thing is. The actual box that houses the blu ray is made out of actual wood. There is gold engraving front and back with 'weathering' marks into the wood. The inside of the wooden frame has plastic grooves for boards containing each season of the series. The boards make up the picture in the front and is extremely thick high quality cardboard. All the edges are smooth and refined. Each season also has a leather tab and there is a leather strap on the outer wooden box that fastens it all together. The 'hand of the king' pin is used to fasten the leather strap to hold in the boards within the wooden frame. It also comes with a code for the complete digital edition for your convenience.

The pictures do not do it justice. You have to see it in person. It is truly breathtaking.

Regardless of how you may feel about the final season, this is a must have item for any die-hard game of thrones fan. I could not be more satisfied with my purchase.

Have you ever ordered something, and had a place picked out where you would display it? Well, that's what I had done before ordering this collection. The box set was delivered today, and I was full of anticipation to check out the set and then place it on the shelf where I once displayed the first 7 seasons of GOT in steelbooks. I walked out my front door only to be confused at the size of the Amazon box on my front porch. It was MASSIVE!! After getting the box into the house, I opened it to find a smaller, but still huge, box inside. Once I got it unpackaged, the reality of the true size of this collection sat in. It measures about 18" x 15". Pictures online don't do this beautiful set justice. The box is made of real wood, with decorative cut marks, and a sturdy leather closure. The GOT insignia is pressed into the leather closure, along with being stamped into the wood with a gold foil. The inserts have numbered leather pull tabs at the bottom, which makes them easy to remove. Each insert has the artwork at the top, and the discs slide securely into disc slots at the bottom. There are 2 discs on the front and 2 on the back. These appear to be the same discs that are in the steenbok collection with fantastic picture and Dolby Atmos sound. There are also 3 bonus discs. 2 with extra bonus features that have not be released before, and one with the animated Conquest and Rebellion. You also get a digital code for the entire series, and also an episode guide that details the content of each disc, including episode titles and bonus features. I had preordered this several months ago, and then decided to cancel that order last month. I then changed my mind last week and was lucky to find that the limited edition had not sold out yet. If you are a fan of GOT, you owe it to yourself to treat yourself to what I think is one of the most beautifully produced box sets I've ever seen.

When writing this review, I'm going to put aside ALL feelings about the series content itself, as this review is on the physical boxed set and disc setup, NOT the show itself. I'm not a television critic. Having said that... this. set. is. AWESOME! It was packed tight in it's cardboard box, which I was afraid to open and take out of it's pristine condition when I received it. The actual box holding the DVD's is a sturdy, heavy wood. The latch to fasten it shut is strong leather, the Hand of the King pin is like the icing on the cake, the sleeves holding the discs are intricately arranged. It is a top-notch, well-crafted, sturdy set that is very appealing to the eye.
Also, the setup of the discs. I haven't watched every episode yet, but it looks as though every episode has commentary if you wish to listen to it. There is also a feature that you can turn on and off that will allow you to view which characters are in the current scene, and the houses, and other supporting background information. This series is very intricate, and I know this might've been helpful had a been a first-time viewer. There is also bonus footage, and as a GoT nerd, I want to know all the things! I cannot wait to watch it all.
I am a faithful Game of Thrones fan. I've read the books, I've watched the series more than once, it is my go-to quite often. If you are contemplating, this set is 100% worth it. I was questioning whether I actually needed the collector's edition set when the boxed DVD set is cheaper, but I am glad I went with this one. It is worth it. Buy it, now!

It's a real show piece that is going to deserve a special display spot. I especially liked the thick leather strap with "The Hand" pin as the locking device, that's a really nice touch. Obviously this thing is expensive but it is beautiful and if you or somebody you really love is a huge game of thrones fan then this is hands down one of the best gifts you could find.

If I were to knitpick then there were two slightly disappointing but I'd like to stress neither would prevent me from making this purchase all over again. First, in front of the awesome portrait made up of all the seasons is a piece of what I guess is Plexi glass that tilts and out of place whenever you remove a season sleeve. Second, each seasons sleeve has a leather tab with the season number printed on them, half of these had been folded to different sides when it was packed for shipping. It also looks like the numbers might fade over time

The box itself is big and very heavy which I didnt expect but a lovely surprise. It has 9 panels inside each contain 3-4 discs. Each panel has a bonus features/contents such as extended scenes and making of each season.

All panels are held up by a beautiful hand of the king/queen pin. Which is a really nice to have.

Also this comes with an episode guide. Inserted inside the 9th panel. Contrary to one review I read here. Which made me to comment even I dont normally give reviews.

With this art piece it made me start to watch the series again. It is a nostalgia watching seasons 1 to 3. Let us see how it goes on rewatching seasons 4 to 8. :)

All in all this is a very good collection. Loved it so much.

Some caveat in the pictures I attached - the dragon, the Switch console and the Babylon 5 collector's box are not included to this package. Just added them to show how big this Game of Thrones Collector's box is.
