This book's so long, I should give five reviews
So ... you've probably heard of this book, which has garnered some moderate success from an otherwise unknown author by the name of George R. R. Martin. Long-winded fantasy? Who does that anymore? My wife and I were planning two long trips this summer, so we headed to the library to find an audio book that wouldn't make the dog howl like a direwolf. We were somewhat taken aback by Game of Thrones, an audiobook roughly as thick as the U.S. tax code. It was on 28 disks. Twenty-eight. Over a two week period we were on the road for roughly 26 hours of driving, and we still had to renew it from the library for another few weeks. Game of Thrones opens with an execution, and believe me when I saw that's far from the only death to come along. The story follows nine viewpoint characters on a world where summers can last decades but winter hits hard, where dragons once flew, and where a giant, centuries old ice wall protects the continent of Westeros from the supernatural dangers of the north. Most of the story revolves around the Stark family, led by Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark. After a long war, Ned's best friend Robert has become king of an assemblage of former nations, and now wants the reluctant Ned to be the King's Hand--basically the guy who does all of his dirty work. The honorable and dutiful Ned--you won't find a lot of characters like that here, outside of the Stark family--packs up and dives into the politics of an increasingly divided kingdom. What could possibly go wrong? In Martin's world, pretty much everything. Tragedy, misunderstandings, treachery, and accidents ensue, as various characters give and take allegiance while others plot for power and ... well, pretty much just power. Despite Ned's desire to just go home, he finds himself entangled in events that will bring war to their world, even while winter nears and evil from north of the wall approaches. Meanwhile, the former royal family of the kingdom plots to take back what they consider theirs. Sound complicated? It is. You can find dozens of maps online, just to show people where all the lands and cities are, and character trees to make interrelationships a little more clear. There's also plenty of nastiness, from graphic violence to child endangerment to incest. It's dark, detailed, and horribly addictive. Emily and I were still catching our breaths when she took the audiobook back to the library. She returned with a new book, this time on good old fashioned paper, and I later determined it was five times as long as my first published novel. Yep. Second book in the series, A Clash of Kings. We haven't seen the TV series, but my biggest warning about the world of A Song of Ice and Fire (which is the name of the entire book series) is that you should maybe schedule some vacation days before you start reading.

    Fun to listen to.

I have to admit that when I first heard the opening title music for HBO's Game of Thrones, I wasn't immediately wowed by it, but as I got a few more listens in, I became absolutely infatuated with it. To me it is the perfect mix of tension, excitement, grandeur, and a general fantasy air. With the entire score being only 8 bucks (MP3 version), I decided to give the whole thing a try instead of just buying the Main Title for 99 cents.

It was definitely a worthy buy. I haven't seen the series recently enough to remember what each track goes with, but they're named well enough to clue you in and it still is a great score to listen to all the way through and some stand out above the rest. You can hear the basic melody of the main title music being used throughout, but I think that's what makes it all tie together nicely in the end. Still, Goodbye Brother doesn't borrow anything from the main title, but is one of my favorite tracks, carrying with it a lot of the unspoken emotions you see when Robb and Jon say goodbye to each other forever. Finale is really fantastic. It makes you want to go watch the last episode again right there.

The sound at times really reminds me of the Battlestar Galactica score. I think these are mostly the Daenaerys tracks.

If you're a fan of scores and of the show, this is well worth the money. I listen to this quite a bit at home and at work.

Ramin Djawadi has a serious talent of being able to add weight and substance while doing very little musically. This is evident here with his score for the first season of Game Of Thrones, which is quite the show over there on HBO. If you haven't gotten into it I recommend doing so. Djawadi was tasked at composing a score that not only crafted a unique world but was able to support the intricate plot of the show. If you don't watch the show then you may be inclined to think this is "Lord Of The Rings" the show when in reality this is a character and plot driven fantasy drama. There isn't that much sword fighting, but there is a lot of doggy style sex.

The score has the signature Djawadi sound. Based off the liner notes it sounds like his score to Clash Of The Titans got him this job so it seems that he stays in that soundscape. The music never acts too boldly, but it commands a certain presences when it's there. Djawadi adds a certain amount of unique instrumental flavors and textures to give an ever so slight ethnic feel. The score can't feel too familiar, but it shouldn't feel like it comes from any particular region since the story and location are all fictitious. It's always hard to compress a season's worth of score onto one CD, but I feel the album does give a good representation of the flow. In my personal opinion I would have liked to see music play a bigger role in the series than it does. Then again LOST may have spoiled me where I expect every episodic drama to be wall to wall music. I'm not saying the score is bad, but I think in the grand scheme of the season it lacks a certain "oomph". The main title motif is strong and Djawadi does reference it now and again throughout the season, but maybe I felt like I needed more themes. Nonetheless the score is fantastic and adds an immense layer of depth to this already impressive series.

The music is great and the score's function is really important for this series. Djawadi delivers a very worthy musical soundscape even if I personally would have liked it to be a bit more thematic and present overall. Then again I can understand the pressures of writing this amount of music in such a short period. He should get nominated for an Emmy at least for the theme because it's quite fantastic. I'm looking forward to where the music will go in the next season because I think there will be huge areas to expand on.

I'm a big fan of Djawadi - West World, Pacific Rim, Prison Break - but this is his finest work. That opening theme never gets old (I've never fast-forwarded through the opening credits of the show, mostly because of the score) and the rest of the tracks are just so powerful, moving, inspirational, etc.

The record gives great performance at high and low ends on my setup - my neighbors probably thought there was a drum circle in my living room earlier today when I was playing it as loud as I was. Of course, your system will determine what you hear, but this has everything in the mix so the better your system, the better it will sound.

The packaging is quality as well - the only downside being, if you're an extreme audiophile, that the sleeves are cardboard. They have great artwork on them and are much easier to slide in and out of the gatefold pockets but if you prefer to handle your records with the utmost care, you'll want to replace them with sleeves that won't potentially scratch the surface of the records. And trust me, you'll want to play these a lot! I think I might just frame the insert sleeves and replace them with the ones I use to replace all old/paper sleeves.

I was so looking forward to this soundtrack being released but was unsure if the music would consist of "full fledged" thematic tracks or just what I like to call "snippets" of tracks meaning tracks under 2 minutes that accompany a scene. There's a bit of both but everything is so cohesive and wonderfully done that it doesn't matter. Whether you are a fan of the show/book (as I am) or a fan of movie/tv scores that can evoke an emotional response or period/cultural feel (as I am again), I think it stands on its own and delivers. Obviously it will have more resonance and connection for those of us that watch and love the show. Ramin Djawadi just earned an entry on my list of favorite composers. Standout tracks for me include:

    1)Main Title (of course!)
    2)The King's Arrival
    3)Love In The Eyes
    4)You'll Be Queen One Day
    5)Jon's Honor
    6)Game of Thrones
    7)Kill Them All
8)Victory Does Not Make Us Conquerors
    9)Fire and Blood
    10)Finale

Received CD and played ... and ... replayed. I listen to it practically every day. Greatly appreciate Ramin Djawadi's brilliant scoring of the television series. Ordered Season 6 - have yet to listen to it due to scheduling. Intend to buy Seasons 2,3,4,5 in the very near future.

I highly recommend this CD to any and all Game of Thrones fans - and - to those that not have the opportunity to view on television - you will love the music....

    ### THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE MUSIC TO SEASON 1 - AMAZON HAVE POOLED TOGETHER THE REVIEWS FOR SEASON 1 AND IT'S APPEARING ON THE PAGE FOR SOUNDTRACK TO SEASON 3. WILL UPDATE THIS FOR SEASON 3 ONCE THE CD IS RELEASED BUT THIS IS JUST A WARNING FOR POTENTIAL BUYERS OF THE SEASON 3 SOUNDTRACK THAT MOST OF THE REVIEWS POSTED CURRENTLY ARE FOR SEASON 1 ###

Ramin Djawadi works in the studios of Hans Zimmer, and is perhaps best well known for his work on Iron Man and Clash of the Titans, neither of which were particularly impressive in their own right. Giving Djawadi the musical reigns for Game of Thrones could be seen as slightly risky, as the Zimmer style of music is arguably not the most suited to the historical fantasy genre. However, based on the quality of this soundtrack, these fears were completely unfounded, with Djawadi composing what is arguably the finest music in his career to date.

The score as heard within the programme itself was relatively minimal, and only key scenes usually contained music. This is probably a good thing, as overscoring a show can be a bad thing.

The only real criticism is that the majority of tracks are fairly short - only 6 tracks out of a total of 29 were over 3 minutes in length, meaning that some of the tracks are quickly over before they have even begun. This is only a minor point though.

I am also undecided on the main theme - the rising three note motif in "Main Title" and "Game of Thrones" does a good job of keeping the pace of the track high, but thematically it seemed a little weak (*EDIT 19/8/11, decided the main theme is great. Simple, but effective*). In "Jon's Honor" and "Kill Them All", the rhythmic and melodic variations on the this 3 note motif did work very well. Aside from that, I also thought the writing for solo violin in Goodbye Brother and "Kill Them All" was outstanding. Special mention should be give to the track "Finale", which contains the best statement of the three note motif and the main theme, with a full orchestral statement and choir to push the epic side up to the max - spine-tingling stuff.

Overall, Djawadi should be commended for this fantastic effort. It has the perfect balance of modern orchestrations, whilst still giving the feel of a mystic far off land. Whilst this is certainly not in the same league as Howard Shore's work on Lord of the Rings, for a fantasy TV show, the quality of the music is high and is definitely worth a purchase if you liked the music in the show or like film/tv scores, as this works brilliantly as a stand alone listen.
