A Game of Thrones

Great Book, Wrong Narrator

This audiobook is worth listening to, but the narrator detracts from its potential. Mr. Dotrice sounds too old. His gravelly voice does not allow for adequate differentiation when young or female characters speak. His diction is not what I expected and he seems to run out of breath in the middle of sentences or phrases. While Mr. Dotrice may be ideal for something with a smaller number of mostly male characters, he was unfairly cast for this book, to both his detriment and the story's. I still recommend the audiobook, but lament the lost potential. Perhaps I'll just read the hardcopy a fourth time.

The cassette recording of G.R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones" is an excellent rendition of an outstanding novel. The reader's voice is effective, yet not overbearing. And as is always the case with Martin, the story is top notch.

If you don't have time to read the hard copy, I recommend the audio cassettes.

34 Stunden ist diese ungekürzte Lesung von "A Game of Thrones" lang und für mich war jede Minute ein Genuss. Roy Dotrice ist der us-amerikanische Rufus Beck, ein Meister im Verstellen der Stimme, der mit einem leichten Dialekt, einer höheren oder tieferen Tonlage oder einem Nuscheln Dutzende an Figuren vor meinem inneren Auge entstehen ließ. Ob Mann oder Frau, Greis oder Kind - er hat sie alle drauf und obwohl ich das Buch bereits kenne, erschien es mir beim Hören fast so, als wäre es eine völlig neue Geschichte, so tief konnte man in die Erzählung eintauchen.
Natürlich ist auch George R.R. Martin für die hohe Qualität dieses Audiobooks verantwortlich, denn er schrieb den Roman, den Dotrice so meisterlich vorliest. Seine Figuren sind eben vielschichtig und haben ihre gewissen Eigenarten und Charakteristika, die so schön in der Lesung zum Vorschein kamen. Für alle, die die Reihe bereits kennen, ist das Hörbuch ein wunderbares Mittel, um von neuem in die Welt der Sieben Königreiche einzudringen.
