Every single Gamera film ever made.
Gamera Dark Horse comics
Gamera prequel comic unreleased in America.
AND a book on the history of Gamera
If all of this isn’t enough to get your attention I may genuinely think there is something wrong with you.
But wait? What or WHO is Gamera? Gamera is a giant fire breathing flying turtle. He defends the earth and has a very specific rule regarding the protection of children. He’s fought for us, died for us and died for us again. Don’t take your time thinking about purchasing this. This is a limited edition and if you have any doubt about buying this just stop it and buy it NOW. Gamera doesn’t guard the universe for nothing.
What’s even more exciting is that the first edition includes a printed volume of the run of American comic books, including The Last Hope, a prequel to the 90’s movies that details Gamera’s origins in Atlantis. It’s really a fantastic enhancement to the mythology for fans.
Pick this up if you like kaiju at all, because this is as good as it gets.
First things first: I've got about half way through the eight discs, film by film, comparing them to earlier releases (two Showa and two Heisei). Gamera has never looked better in a U.S. release that I am aware of. That's not to say the image is perfect. There is still a lot of grain, but the image is certainly sharper than before. Everything looks crisp and vibrant, even the older films and nothing, yet, suffers from over-saturation (definitely something Criterion screwed up with some of the Showa Godzilla films). It would be nice to have a perfectly clear image, of course, but with older films, sometimes, that's just not realistic. Though who know what later releases will prove. With this, I'm happy and will update should I find anything.
The extras are generous. A map. two books (one a comics collection, one a kind of Gamera film by film description, retrospection, interview and cool graphic art pieces). I haven't even looked too much at them yet. and while the set is big, it's not absurdly so (cough cough Criterion) and at least will fit on a bookcase. I'm not a fan of these ostentatious style collections cases, but at least this one seems better thought out than most (though I will be storing it and reducing my discs down to an eight disc Blu-ray case).
If you are looking for the best possible Gamera Collection on BluRay, with a lot of cool extras, including the lost Lake Texarkana Dub from Gamera 2, this is it! Yes, the first thing I checked was the Lake Texarkana dub.

Its HUGE, very weighty, like a brick and the height, width of a massive encyclopaedia. Its like the Godzilla collection but on steroids and much, MUCH better. The packaging and contents are of such a high quality and the artwork beautiful. Not only do you get all the films and alternative dubs, you get a map, postcards, weighty book, big comic book compendium....its a thing of beauty and for me the release of the year, the best thing ARROW has ever done to date and thats saying a lot.
As much as I love the Criterion Godzilla collection, this has just kicked sand in its face, they have raised the bar a hundred notches and should be massively proud of a set that does justice to the films, their makers, the fans AND themselves. Just buy it, I guarantee you will be blown away by it. Any amount of pics cant do it justice.
I also have the Criterion Godzilla collection, and although it pains me, the Gamera collection blows it out of the water, particularly due to extra's and presentation. The only downsides (for me) - and similar to the Godzilla collection is the cardboard disc holders - getting the damn things out, and the loose paper sleeve notes on the outside of the box once unwrapped. This nit picking though.
I have just dipped into the 1st film, quality appears grand (for age).
Get it before it sells out!!
Thank you Arrow !
this big baby landed today (actually landed yesterday but was damaged, so i had to get a replacement from Amazon)
Forget the wailing "cheerleaders " who review without having yet received the item
Why is Amazon always full of them?
Anyway, here goes....
Packaging/ structure - Not worthy of such a release
Eh? Why ?
Bottom line, the 8 discs along with 12 art cards are tightly packaged in such a way that unless you are ultra careful in removing them, you risk damaging the casing
The 12 art cards incidentally are fantastic
Actual additional contents of boxset - fantastic
The 130 hardback comic book covers the initial 4 part Dark Horse 1996 comic, plus the prequel comic...absolutely excellently well done.
There is also an 80 page book which acts as a very good guide to the films
Yes, i have genuinely received this long awaited big mama of a box set, i',m not impressed with the initial packaging/structure, have not watched the movies yet, yes the books are good
Overall Conclusion: If you have small fingers, you've won a watch with the discs and art cards
If not....This is still a fantastic, long awaited, massive release for the fans
5 star for the box and none for packaging.
