The models are all quick and easy to assemble, and build with the minimum of tools, and pre-coloured red or gold to represent the two factions so you could choose not to paint, (or paint later) and still use them to begin playing the game.
In basic terms, this set pits the stormcast eternals (gold knights) against the khorne bloodbound (red warriors). The golden stormcast include some useful winged "prosecutor" characters and a "lord relictor" figure who can cast spells on the enemy. The gold troops are further broken down into basic "liberators" or more powerful "retributors", against the huge red mob of "reavers", or the more effective samurai -like "blood warriors". The red side also includes the huge "khorgorath" monster and the "blood stoker" figure.
The Sigmar game rules are similar but simpler than the current 8th edition warhammer 40k rules, so its easier to understand for the newcomer. The very well illustrated manual includes all the backstory and info as well as painting and build advice, plus some basic game scenarios to get started.
There are 44 models in total, which represent excellent value when you start adding up the cost of individual models when bought separately. This "Thunder and blood" set sits in the mid price range between the £30 more "Age of sigmar" set (which only has 3 models more), and the £20 "storm of sigmar" set which only has 13 basic models. Also note both of the other sets don't include a game mat or a terrain piece.
This package also includes a copy of the rules, double sided game mat, a range ruler and a pack of 6 sided (normal) dice. You can also use the packaging insert as a piece of terrain (to hide behind, jump over etc). The only shame (which isn't really a big deal) were that the faction data sheets were printed in back of the the manual, rather than offered as separate cards, as in the very basic "Storm of sigmar" starter set.
The included manual shows that you could choose to paint each model with a basic paint scheme, or you can spend lots of time painting the all models to bring out all the super details. The quality of the mouldings are excellent, and if you decide to paint and wash using the described citadel method the results are spectacular. The paints and washes are not included in this set, but you can get specific starter sets for each faction, or a get a basic citadel paint set and add to it as you go.
