great rifle but take scope adjustment caps off!
4 out of 5 stars
great rifle but take scope adjustment caps off!
It's an awesome beginner air rifle! It powerful and fun to plink with it. You can use it to hunt rats like I did. The only thing is when you get it take the scope adjustment covers off and throw them away. The elevation on mine broke off because the cap was too tight. All in all a great rifle though.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. I have zero experience with air rifles but was in the military for 28 years so have plenty of experience shooting other weapons. I am super impressed with this weapon! It's accurate, powerful, and from butt to barrel is a well-put-together product! Only 2 cons I can think of is that I wish it had a front sight and I wish I could load more than one round at a time. But like I said, I'm new with air rifles so wasn't sure what to expect with it. The fact that I have to cock it (break-barrel) also kind of sucks but it's not a major obstacle. Considering the price, these cons are minor.

When I first got this rifle, I opened the box but couldn't find the rounds of ammo which was supposed to have been included. Then I went on Amazon and started asking other buyers if they had the same problem. I'm glad I didn't leave feedback then because I found the ammo today. You just have to look real good for it. It's taped to a little block of styrofoam. Plenty of ammo included to get your Big Cat sighted in!

I noticed some people complained about the scope but for me, the scope was ok. You get what you pay for. But considering the quality of the rifle, you get MORE than what you pay for!

Unlike most of the people reviewing, I got this for backyard plinking purposes., not hunting/vermin removal. For that, it's very excellent.

Despite the polymer stock, it feels solid. Definitely a good weight in the hand, not at all toylike. The cocking mechanism is... brisk, shall we say. It's not impossible to cock, but it definitely requires a good hand. I found it was easiest to brace the butt against my leg and then cock it, instead of holding it free with both hands. The girlfriend required help when she tried it.

As just about every review has already stated, the scope it comes with is absolute junk. Get rid of it AND the rings it comes with. A good airgun mount and scope will only set you back about $50, and it's money well spent.

If this is your first pellet rifle, remember that there's a break in period (most people report it takes 300 or so shots) before the gun will settle down. Also, if you're used to powder burners, look up the proper way to hold and fire a springer pellet rifle, you'll thank yourself for it later.

A couple random notes:

Some people complained about not getting the 50 rounds of PBA Platinum in their box. Mine came with it, taped inside a recess on one of the packing pieces. Check carefully.

I busted out my chrono and put some pellets down range with the PBA and they were averaging 1100 or so FPS, with a very noticeable crack. I switched to 7.4 grain Crossman wadcutters (again, backyard plinking is my goal), and they were averaging out to 895 FPS, with very little crack. If you've got neighbors that like to complain, something to keep in mind.

The Gamo Big Cat is probably one of the better rifles in it's price category. I bought this after looking around a lot and doing quite a lot of research on different rifles. I also read a lot of reviews!

The machining is a little sloppy (there are a lot of edges and seams that could easily be removed in manufacturing). The Gamo 4x scope isn't very good (4x is pretty useless at any range I'll be firing at) and I would suggest replacing the scope with a better one. The trigger guard also should be metal, not plastic.

However, for the money it is powerful and accurate. It is fairly comfortable to fire. A lot of people have complained about the trigger, but I haven't had any issues with it. The trigger is adjustable. And if you want to replace the plastic trigger you can (aftermarket).

One other note is that the PBA ammo is too light to be accurate. The lead pellets are much more stable and have a more predictable trajectory - especially if it is windy. The Gamo pellets are pretty good. Crossman makes decent pellets too. Daisy ammo is of marginal quality so I would avoid Daisy ammo when there is so little difference in price.

Have fun!
