A few years ago, the remote to my garage stopped working- changing the batteries and even ordering a new remote didn't help. So I disconnected the "lifting mechanism" and manually opened and closed the garage door..a big pain and a big security risk (since I also keep a lot of tools in my garage).
A month or so ago, I decided that I really needed to solve the problem and started checking out replacing the whole lifting mechanism (despite the fact that the door still would open via the control button inside the garage).
Along the way, I discovered the new world of bluetooth and wifi remotes..and this definitely opened up possibilities .
I knew that the wifi signal near the garage was very weak (and I have several repeaters around the house) - the last thing I wanted was to struggle to open the garage in the morning because of weak wifi...bluetooth seemed a better option.
I also decided that I didn't want anything involving batteries - rather I wanted an install and forget option.
GarageMate seemed to tick most boxes.
However, since I live in Israel (240V) I wanted to make sure that the device worked on multiple voltages...
The GarageMate website gave NO indication of the voltage requirement so I contacted them via the 'Contact' form on their website.
They DID NOT reply - and for that no-no they loose one star.
The Amazon listing gave more information and so I ordered the device.
Arrived quickly and was well packed.
Set-up is very very simple and I had it installed and running in 10 minutes.
The accompanying app is fairly simple - press up, press down - no fancy options beyond allowing the app to automatically open the door (which I don't want)
The device is a simple bluetooth dongle that sits between the motor and the external control button.
$50 seems expensive BUT it does the job very well and has certainly solved my garage door problem.
Defiantly better to control the garage via my iPhone rather than dealing with (another) annoying remote control.
Recommended if you want a simple, easy solution.
First of all - as the instructions say, pair the GarageMate bluetooth module using the app - not your iphone bluetooth device screen. It doesn't show up in the bluetooth device screen to pair it.
The first phone I paired was simple. The second one wasn't - the GarageMate device would not go into pairing mode - I tried several times. To get it to go into pairing mode a second time, I had to unplug it, then plug it back in - then it went into pairing mode and paired with the second iphone. I had to unplug it and plug it back in again to pair it with my Apple Watch. The watch app pairing procedure is not straight forward - you open the little gear icon and click to add a garage - but you don't see the same menu you got in the iphone app. Instead, there's a screen button that you click (that does nothing when you click it), then you go back to the first screen of the app and click the on-screen button as if you were trying to open the garage door. Doing that, it then pairs the apple watch and gives you instructions on how to change the name of the garage. Those garage renaming instructions do not work. There is no place to change the name of the garage. Maybe if I added a second garage I could see garage names in the apple watch app? I only have one garage.
The bluetooth range appears pretty good. I tried it 25 feet away and the GarageMate receiver got the signal. That is great range in my opinion. The issue with having to unplug the GarageMate receiver each time I want to pair a device should be part of the instructions from GarageMate. Since it's not, that makes me wonder if I got a buggy unit.
I've had routine issues getting my garage opener remote to work for as long as I can remember. I think there's a lot of radio signal interference in my area. Sometimes it works from the street, and other times it won't respond until I stand right in front of the garage and wave the remote all over in front of the garage door while holding the button down. This little GarageMate device should solve that issue, and if it does, it's easily worth what it cost.
