Here it is: if you’re not sucked in by the end of the first chapter, nothing can do it. I was before and am now.
I’m delighted that this book has been published and that I got to see it develop.
Excellent job, Hellie, you did good!
This is the kind of book that makes me eagerly read debuts. I love it when authors come up with new and innovative ideas and have a fresh voice and I'm already eager to read more by Hellie Heat. That being said, I wouldn’t necessarily call this a romance because the love story is not the main focus of the plot. Instead the Romeo and Julien vibe of the story is a plot driver: Eden and Micah don't get to spend that much time developing a relationship because they are too busy dealing with the political intrigue of their respective factions. I expect that the relationship will have more time to develop in the sequels.
The world building was great. You'll get a lot of hunger games vibes I think and the cast of characters was interesting and made me want to learn more about them. Its really hard to make someone care about find out the bad story of a random side character but this author has figured out how to. I highly recommend this to anyone that likes dystopian books and don't let the content warnings scare you off because the story is not as dark as they make it sound.
Micah was practical and intelligent, able to maneuver through his underground world like a shadow. While Micah lived with his brother and several other men, he kept mostly to himself and never dreamed of anything in his life ever changing.
Eden appeared from the world above like a bright light in Micah's darkness. The two had what should have been a one-time tryst but quickly realized they couldn't get enough of each other. Unfortunately, Eden had secrets and responsibilities that would put them both in extreme danger.
While so much of this world - above and below ground - was hopeless and horrible, Eden and Micah together were wonderful. Their feelings for each other gave Eden a spark of a dream for change, and gave Micah his first feelings of happiness in years. Nothing was easy for these men, and I can't even imagine what they will have to go through in the next two installments of this series. Whatever comes, I do know that I will be here for all of it. The characters were easy to fall for, the world was brutal and realistic, and the writing was excellent. I can't wait for more!
I had difficulty with this book at first. Nothing to do with how well it's written - the opposite in fact. It was kinda...stressful. Put me a head space similar to Handmaid's Tale. Certainly not a comfortable place.
Be that as it may, the story was so gripping and I found myself completely caught up in the lives of Eden & Micah (along with their friends & families) as they battled through so much. I don't "do" spoilers, so that's all I have to say on that, lol!
The story leaves on a barely hfn - really more of a cliffhanger. I typically hate those, but inthis case it made perfect sense. I am EAGERLY awaiting book two!
