About the Author

A wife, mother of two active boys and native of North Georgia, Sarah Olver was raised running barefoot on rich red clay. However, it wasn't until Olver moved to Ontario, where she and her husband purchased their first home, that she discovered her love for gardening. Together with her husband, Olver has transformed the front and backyards of many homes adding curb appeal and dramatically increasing their value.  Over the last fifteen years, what began as a simple, backyard landscape project has grown into a full-fledged passion for not only growing gorgeous perennials, but also growing and harvesting organic produce.  In addition to transforming many of her own home gardens and feeding entire neighborhoods with her organic veggies and herbs, Olver is often sought after for garden growing advice from friends and family.

Throughout the spring, Olver can always be found, coffee in hand, walking her gardens in the early morning.  While there are countless garden experts making valuable contributions to the horticultural scene, Olver brings a refreshingly practical, girl-next-door vibe with just the right amount of useful information to give the average Joe confidence to get their hands dirty. With fifteen years of garden experience in both Canada and Georgia, Olver weaves together extensive reading and sage wisdom from both Master Gardeners and green-thumb enthusiasts across eastern North America into an easy to read, easy to understand and unintimidating package.

I've been a homeowner here in Austin for about 3 years now, and we have a huge backyard. My wife is always trying to create a decent garden, but everything always seems to die and we just end up with weeds. I got this book so both of us could figure out what we were doing wrong. We are both beginners and never owned a home before, so until we read this book, we had to get all our information from random clerks at Home Depot. This book was very helpful. Just in the first few chapters alone, which deals with the best locations to plant, we found a lot of valuable tips and information.

Overall, a great purchase for the low price of 99 cents. I would definitely recommend it to gardeners and non-gardeners alike!

So many books are full of information that is interesting but hard to implement. This is the one book you will really use. Its clear language and no-nonsense methods are great for anyone new to gardening or for those of us who have tried gardening for a long time and keep wondering what we've been doing wrong. I highly recommend it!

I have not finished this book, but the information I have already soaked in has helped explain why I have run into problems with my garden areas. I wish I had read this before I had started. It would have saved me some frustrations and expense! It is very informative and simple enough for beginners to understand with sections added for the more experienced.

I was very pleased with the no-nonsense information and the easily understood format. It doesn't matter if you're a novice or a seasoned gardener, there's something for everyone. This book gives you a choice of basic or advanced information and the plain-speaking way that the author presents it is quite refreshing.Highly recommended.

This is a very practical book full of great advice regarding location of plants and how shade and sun can affect them, types of soil, pest prevention, composting, fertilizers, how to test the soil, types of soil, etc, etc, etc. If you're an expert gardener, there are sections highlighted especially for you. More amateur gardeners can ignore them or read them, up to them. I like the tip about tossing a bit of your soil in a Ziploc bag and taking it to the local Cooperative Extension office to have it analysed, that's way easier than measuring the ph levels yourself. I also appreciate the pictures in the section about digging holes, sometimes words can't explain it as well as a picture can. Suffice to say, I am amazed and the level of detail this book offers. The mulch section alone covers pine straw, wood clips, pebbles, etc. with their pros and cons. I can tell this is an author that really cares about gardening and helping others become better gardeners.

This book is packed with excellent content on all matters of gardening...vegetable and flowering plants. it is a reference book for beginners as well as those who have been gardening awhile. Very detailed and lots of reference info to get even more about what you might need. There are very few photos so don't expect that. This is not a picture book. If you want to learn more about soils, sunlight, drainage, fertilizers, composting, etc. this book is awesome.

Wonderful gardening guide full of very useful information. Loved it!! We have planted a lot of flowers this year and switched to using a different type of mulch, and we are thrilled with how everything has turned out. The guide is well-designed, making it easy to look up the info I'm looking for. Well worth the download!

I have to give applause fir this author. As a relatively new gardener (8years and counting) and a Master Gardener of 1year I took this book expecting to be somewhat bored. I certainly was not! Ms. Oliver has a pleasant, yet informative writing style, and while I was familiar with most f what she write her explanations were simpler and clearer than any other garden manual I have read. I will be watching fir other offering by the author.
