Super WEAK Garden Trowel

I purchased this based on others' reviews stating that it was high quality and durable. Well... it broke the first time I used it. Don't waste your money on this cheap trowel--there is only a small weld holding the handle to the spade end, and it is not "super strong". After this one broke, I bought a Fiskars brand spade for about $7 that actually is "super strong", as the handle and spade part are all one solid piece.

Good trowel, funny maintenance guide

The trowel is very sturdy and the handle is designed for a comfortable grip if your hand is large enough. Warning: it may be not that convenient for a person having a small or even midsized hands. Say, I am quite OK with it, while my wife says it is larger than she'd like.

The promised "Care Guide" is indeed arrived in my email short after the delivery, and a wonder it was! I cannot help quoting a section verbatim:

Daily Maintenance
1. After each day’s use, clean the dirt, sap and plant residue off the stainless steel trowel and handle by using mildly soapy water and an
old toothbrush or other non-metallic brush. Avoid chlorine based soaps, they can damage the stainless steel. Also, do not leave the trowel submerged in water for an extended period of time. Clean and dry quickly!
2. After cleaning, be sure to dry well with a cloth and spray oil based lubricant on both sides of the trowel. Wipe excess oil off before storing.
3. After lubricating make sure to store the trowel in a dry place out of the weather.

Are you serious? "Spray oil based lubricant" -- is it a gun or a simple garden tool? I have a set of good cooking knives made of machine steel (the sort they made ploughs of) that never pretended to be stainless. I dry them and shove in the drawer. They never got any stains, ever.

After having read the "Guide," I thought I purchased a cheap piece of junk instead of easy maintenance reliable stainless steel tool, but decided to give it a try. For the credit to this trowel I have to say that after I had kept it on a covered patio (under the roof) for a month just nocking off the dirt, it did not in fact become any worse. So, at the end of the day it seems to be indeed stainless.

After breaking two store-bought trowels in the last several years, I was seeking one of "better quality". After reading many reviews, I decided to try this one. It got me through my spring clean-up in less time than usual (perhaps due to it being both "sharper" than the aluminum counterparts I was used to and also perhaps because it is a bit larger than I was used to). I think it has a very nice grip (I wear size L in a man's glove). 5-stars is apparently supposed to mean "I love it", but frankly, I'm not that devoted of a gardener. But I certainly Like It and I am completely satisfied; therefore it gets a 5-star rating from me! : )

One design comment: The handle is black and green. There is no need for it to be "camouflaged"! Maybe I'll add a "tail" to mine. : )

I have some tough, clay soil in places, and I needed a strong trowel. This one is working well for me.

Pros -

Very happy with the strength...will try to update if it bends or weakens after continued use.

Cons - It felt a little heavy in my hand at first until I got used to it; now I don't notice it...also, it seems a little wider than the transplanting trowel that I was using for weeding (the transplanting trowel bent and became weak after continued weeding in the heavy, clay soil). Lastly, the logo on the handle was coming loose (today when I was using it I peeled it off and kept going. It was not a big deal).

I believe this trowel deserves all the positive reviews. I have owned MANY garden and digging trowels in my years. My wife has owned, used and worn out many more than I. This is a quality tool. I especially like the shank to blade weld and the attention to finishing and polish. With the exception of the modern soft-grip handle which is very well sized, shaped, and balanced; this reminds me of tools from the early twentieth century and even earlier. I am a picky old codger. I believe if you are also one who appreciates good tools, you might like this one.
