It definitely has the distinct "feel" of Kristen's other work, which I see as a good thing. She has a very "conversational" voice in her writing, which makes her characters (especially her viewpoint characters) much more easy to relate to. She also does a great job of handling the "unreliable narrator," giving us the narrator's own perspective, thereby allowing us to learn things along with Renny - and while occasionally we may realize that events are going to unfold in a different way than the narrator expects, it's not to the degree where the narrator feels like an idiot - just a bit young and naive (which she's intended to be).
Honestly, an excellent work, in a simple and easily-readable voice, that explores things not being as they appear, public perceptions, and especially, trust - both well-placed and misplaced. An excellent piece, and well worth the read.
This captivating novel kept me on the edge of my seat for an entire afternoon with its plot twists and turns. 'The Gardener' is a very moving story that talks about the power that persuasion and misconception can carry, as well as the dangerous consequences. 'The Gardener' also stresses the importance of instinct and individuality.
The characters are unique and well developed. The subplots help to move the story along in an amazing flow right up to the gripping end!
