Product Description

With a classic design that is both decorative and functional, this stoneware fermentation crock provides a time-tested vessel for transforming cucumbers into crunchy homemade pickles, as well as making sauerkraut, kimchi and other gourmet fermented treats. Also ideal for kitchen and household storage. Made in Ohio, each thick-walled crock is fired at a high temperature for durability, finished with a food-safe, lead-free glaze and stamped with a signature seal denoting the size. Three options: buy the crock on its own; purchase the crock and cover; or choose the complete kit which includes crock, cover and weights to keep foods submerged for safe, effective pickling and fermenting.

I love my crock. I recently made my first batch of super food sauerkraut and it was divine! I am now starting on my seventh batch. I used an old Tupperware lid, specifically a size D canister lid found on ebay (made in USA - food safe plastic) and cut it down to fit in the crock to hold the vegetables down. I put a large pickle jar filled with water on top. It works perfectly. My friend uses a gallon size freezer bag filled with water to weigh down her cabbage which seems to work just fine. With the one gallon size I find that if the cabbages are about the size of a head of iceberg lettuce get 3. If the are the size of a large grapefruit get 4. I have been to the nearby restaurant supply store in my area (Cash & Carry) and purchased a 5lb bag of shredded cabbage. I notice some small ethnic grocers (Mexican, Ukranian etc.)sell shredded cabbage in a 5lb. bag. I use 3tbls. Kosher salt for my 5lb. of cabbage. I work it in thirds. One third of my cabbage and 1 tbls. salt. I put it in a bowl and start massaging it. It seems to take about 10 minutes until I have enough liquid to cover the cabbage. (I do this while watching television) Massage the next two thirds, put it all in this lovely crock, put on your cut down Tupperware lid, put the water filled jar on top and cover with a cloth. Every few days skim off the bloom. In a week you have wonderful sauerkraut. Cancer fighting, pro-biotic yumminess. Don't be afraid to do this. It is really easy! Happy healthy eating!

This one gallon crock is perfect for making homemade sauerkraut. There is plenty of room for almost 2 heads of cabbage. One word of warning: the 10-15 Liter Stone Weights that are suggested with this item do not fit in the crock. I had to trim those down with a tile saw in order for them to fit inside the crock.

I met an Amish dude at my local farmer's market who espoused kraut fermentation in an open Crock. Since I live in Ohio, this Crock was cheap and heavy duty. I can easily fit 5lbs of sliced cabbage, tampered down, covered with a saucer and then topped with a ziplock filled with water. The bag of water weighs down the fermenting Kraut and acts as a one way valve so the fermentation gases escape but keeps the ambient air out.

This is a nice sturdy crock, a whole lot cheaper than the fancy pickling pieces. However, I have yet to find a plate that fits inside perfectly. My attempts to whittle one down also failed. It would be great if they made one that fit.

We bought this crock to hold kitchen utensils in our new home. It is a great size on the counter top and is very heavy so it can not be moved easily when our nephews "help" in the kitchen. The crock is not as white as it shows in the picutre, so it is not a perfect match in our kitchen. It is more of a dark cream. Just wanted to share in case there are peoople like me using it for decoration.

I hate to be gouged on Amazon and would advise you all to google the item you are about to buy to see what it costs elsewhere. I make this a practice before hitting Click to buy. This crock and all the other sizes are available in my local ACE store for considerably less. The 3 gallon one cost me $39 yesterday and is advertised here for $59!! Some ACE stores are better supplied than others so check all ACE stores near you for supplies before purchasing.

The item itself is very nice, great glaze, and heavy. Did not like to hit the crock with a 1 star rating, but there is no rating for seller or price.

The 1 gall crock was $20 something at ACE - approx 1/3 of cost on amazon. The bigger sizes were sold for $20 to $30 less at ACE

CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!

Perfect for making Russian "kvashennaya kapusta" fermented cabbage, with cranberries and carrots. I bought it without a lid and in place of a lid/weight I use a plastic gallon bottle filled with water (an empty milk or juice gallon would do). The shape of the bottom of my weight fits the crock perfectly.
