I knew this family well but only one side of the story. I was heartbroken to read some of what Amber and her family went through. She has an easy to read and follow writing style that keeps you wanting to turn pages and find out what happens next. It's a story of betrayal, abuse, sadness and secrets but also love, success and achievements..I found myself saying Wow! Whoa! and OMG!

Intriguing Title - Great Book

I was intrigued by the book’s title, “Gardening With Guns”. You do have to read most of the book before discovering how that can possibly make sense.

The author’s memoir, despite dealing with difficult and at times painful experiences, is hopeful, optimistic and not hard to read. In fact, it’s very hard to put down. It almost reads like a good mystery. The author peels back the layers of childhood experiences and shows how they influence her adult life and the lives of the adults around her. She takes the reader backwards and forwards in time, in a way that flows easily and makes perfect sense.

Having grown up in England, I was surprised how the detailed descriptions brought back memories of my own childhood I hadn’t thought about for years. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.

I read this book on a whim and relaxed in the pleasant, entertaining and clever descriptions of Amber's surroundings. For example, I could actually imagine floating in the pool, a little hung over, or gardening among every color of lily in a garden in Ohio.

But I cried over Amber's losses, and as I imagined a young girl experiencing humiliation, yet carrying on without an adult to protect her.

As I closed the book, I felt relieved to know that Amber and Matt did have many good years and raised 3 amazing children, I felt thankful that her brothers are in her life, and that she found true love again. My heart is warmed by the fact that Amber has succeeded, and felt confident enough to share her story so others know it is possible to overcome trials and thrive without bitterness. I feel inspired.

A well written book and a page turner. Very vivid descriptions of emotions of young children dealing with so many secrets and darkness all the way to adulthood. I really could not put the book down. I found it at times painful and shocking to read some of the events, and yet it was written wonderfully, not with anger, but with a surprising calm and a forgiveness.
