I found a place in the kitchen near where they seem most concentrated and that wasn't directly competing with other light sources. We leave it on all night. I tried moving it to a new location that was even closer to the sink. The flies just aren't that attracted to it, so its not very effective.
Its not completely worthless- it did catch 4 flies and a handful of smaller flying insects that we didn't notice flying around before (probably because we are distracted by the huge number of flies), but its just not very effective. I'll keep using it for a while to see how it does maintaining a more regular fly problem than the crazy infestation that we have now.
It works, and it works well. No complaints, but the paper is kind of pricey. You can probably make your own for it honesty.
I use them at home as well. Place it close to the kitchen and watch it work. It's a nightlight and efficient at wiping out what my dad used to call "no-see-em" bugs.
I had been bombing and fogging and spraying my basement for weeks only to find more and more dead phorids (gnat like flies) all over. Anyone that has had this infestation knows you must and I mean must find the source of the flies. I threw lye down the drains, sprayed baseboards, cleared out pantries... you name it I did it. Yet, I could never find the source.
I noticed the unit near my meters (bought two) was getting a full card a day and the one near my boiler (about 20 ft away) a full card every other day... so I deduced that the source must be closer to the meters. I moved the unit near the meters around a few days to see if there was any variation in the amount caught. I noticed that when I put the unit on the floor near the meters (with an extention cord) it was catching more and the one near the boiler was catching less. I was on to something...
Long story short... I put the one I had near the meters on the floor right where the foundation slab met the footing of the house. I had filled a card in 12 hours. Sure enough, there was a pin hole crack between the slab and the footing and they were coming out like crazy. All behind a piece of pipe I had laying there for years.
I epoxied the entire perimeter of the basement (the house probably settled after Sandy) and Drylocked the epoxy coat. Not one freakin' fly thereafter. The exterminator would have never caught this or I would have gone through a fortune in fees before he did.
So this device saved me a great deal of expense and aggravation.
BIG HINT: There are glue traps out there for rats that are sold much much cheaper. You can sorta adhere one of them to the side of the unit to extend the cycle time of the glue refills that fit in the device. I had a major issue so it was becoming prohibitively expensive and this cut the cost significantly. Remember that once they get filled, they become less effective. I will continue to leave one of the two I bought on during the summer months with the OEM refill just in case but, I would buy this product hands down for use as a nest "radar" and for the occasional fly/gnat that comes around as well. Also, it's American Made! So buy two!
I have tried many many other tricks for getting the bugs out of my house, but none of them worked well. This trap does the job for many different types of bugs too, which is great.
I figured out how to use the large packs of yellow sticky pads sold at a much cheaper price by cutting them myself rather than paying an arm and a leg for the sticky pad replacements they sell for this.
TLDR; works great, buy cheap off brand sticky pads and cut them yourself
