Editorial Reviews

Review

"The writing is snappy and engaging, the content is excellent with substantial contextual information including patronage and reception, and the "boxed information" is useful and not just flashy graphics to make the book seem interesting and trendy."

"The superior quality of its photos and illustrations is one of the principal reasons that the Department of Art History has consistently used Art through the Ages."

"Three strengths of Gardner's are: the choice of imagery discussed; the quality and size of the images, and the clarity; and detail of the discussion which includes a strong balance between style and history."

About the Author

Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. This book is incredibly diffcult to navigate and study from. Much of it is written poorly with too many unneccesary tangents and scattered thoughts throughout each chapter. The lack of straightforward and deliberate thought makes it a beast to study from. I really wish my professor would have picked another textbook.

I had to purchase this book for a college course I took in the spring of 2012. Although the book had lots of great information and very beautiful photographs, it could be hard to follow at times. I literally had to download a dictionary app on my phone to keep up with the terminology, and it wasn't uncommon for me to look up two to three words in a single paragraph. It's really an excellent book, just be prepared to look up information to gain a better understanding of the material being presented to you.

This is a great book- thorough, descriptive, and concise. Really more of a history guide with pictures, actually. If one is really interested in the subject, however, I recommend buying the complete edition, instead of simply the 101 version (i.e. this one.)

The book arrived quickly. Aside from slightly worn covers, it's in very good condition. It is filled with color photos of worldly art, much of which is mesmerizing. It's the required reading for a class, so informative and well organized as well. Though, it didn't come with artstudy printed access card.

I got this book because I needed it for a class. Someone who is actually interested in art may find it interesting.

The book is way too expensive. Selling it back is even worse. Still the book is brand new and in great condition. I have no problem there or in the way it was delivered since it came in time.

I enjoyed this textbook, and I saved a lot of money by buying a used copy rather than buying the latest edition (and fortunately the instructor was okay with that).
