Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gardner's presents a narrative that runs like a thread of unity through the text."

"I examined the options, and found Gardner's to be the best in giving the students the best images and the clearest discussion of both style and historical context."

"What I particularly like about the Gardner is its flexibility for a variety of pedagogical/methodological/thematic approaches, which is due to the depth of its coverage of certain very pivotal figures/moments/issues in western art history."

Gardner's Art Through the Ages is a fantastic resource. This book is written more for an advanced audience. The text covers a myriad of important topics. There are sections on art history and critical perspectives. This is Volume II of a massive collegiate work. This resource is often assigned for art majors in college. I read the book because my wife was an art major in college and I was interested in the book from a historical perspective.

The resource covers art between the late Middle Ages to the present. Every significant artist and distinct art style are covered. The book focuses mostly on painting, but architecture, sculpture, and woodcuts are given great prominence as well. A strength of the book is the inclusion of African, Native American, and Asian art styles and genres.

This book may not be for everyone. The writing style is a little dry at times. It is written for an audience that already has some familiarity with major artists and styles. Still, this is an impressive one-volume resource that will prove to be of great value to artists and historians alike. The book will appeal to historians because it has lengthy sections describing the historical context and conditions in which the art was produced.

This was the textbook that was required by one of my elective courses (art history from Mesopotamia to Modern times) in community college. I learned more world history from this book and the course than any of the more traditional history courses that I had taken before.

Some of the information was useful but the reading is VERY dry and often unhelpful. There are few section breaks to help break up the reading which can make it hard to concentrate and difficult to return to when you inevitably need to take a break.

Purchased from McGraw Tower Books and fulfilled by Amazon. Bought a used book because it was so much more cheaper than buying it brand new. They said the book's condition was acceptable and thats exactly what I got. It wasn't ripped or torn. It definitely had wear and tear on it but it was in an acceptable condition for the price.

The outer edges of the book were a little curved, but other than that, the condition of the book was like it was brand new. It even included the little take-out pamphlet. As for the content of the book, it was very informative and helpful for my art class. I found out the names of artists, paintings, and sculptures that I never knew before!

I obtained this book through the Amazon student textbook rental program. I was panicking since my school did not have any copies of ANY of the books I needed left, but lo and behold, I found this copy PRIME on Amazon. (Long live Amazon!). It arrived within the requisite two days, and is in good condition - few marks (I've found the highlighted bits to actually be relevant - thank you previous renter!) bent pages, etc.

The subject itself is actually more fascinating than I anticipated. I'm taking the class simply to satisfy my last art credit, but I've found that I'm actually becoming engrossed in some of the artistic history. The pictures are clear, and relevant, and the inset notes are helpful. I probably wouldn't read it on my own, but being required to take the class, the book ain't half bad.

I wouldn't have bought this book if it wasn't for the class I'm taking because it just the history of art and the pictures to go along with it...the book was in okay condition...useable, for the most part...the edges where a bit torn up and some of the pages inside I had to tape...it had some markings in it as well but it's a used book so it's too be expected...I use it a lot for class though so, other than that I'm satisfied.

I bought this book for my Art History class and I really enjoyed the class there was a lot of excellent pieces and great information about the artists. The only negative to the way the textbook is laid out is that the author uses a lot of big words and descriptions when one of two small words would do. It's almost as if he wants to transport you to the European past where these masterpieces were created. All in all, thought I definitely would buy this even if it wasn't for a class there is a lot of information and it is easy enough to understand if you can get past some of the intellectual bluster!

The seller shipped my textbook quickly and the book was in excellent condition, I would definitely use this seller again! : )
