The Gargoyle Bat is a terrific novella, gripping and fast-paced with a plot that keeps twisting until the surprising finale. The novel is written in the point-of-view of a teenage boy, Jesse, and author Del Jack gets it just right; the short attention span, the exasperation with adults, the bursting energy of a teenager combined with the vulnerability of encountering real danger and real pain. The city of London comes to life in a way that reminds me of the Neil Gaiman novel Neverwhere (Neverwhere: A Novel), moody, full of shadows and mystery, and completely enchanting. I recommend this novel for teenagers, kids who like adventure novels with plenty of action and danger like The White Gates (The White Gates), and adults who love a good book. Enjoy!
