Stephen Dewar is Irish and has lived and worked in Russia since early 1996. During this period he has been bugged, followed by various security services, nearly deliberately murdered by police special forces, threatened with murder on other occasions, and formally accused of being a spy selling the secrets of travel agents to western intelligence services. Despite these problems he is happily married to a Russian girl. Most of this time he was an economic development consultant to Russian government ministries at national and regional level, except when he was unemployed or when he tried his hand as a business news reporter and then strategy adviser to the Chief Executive at "Russia Today" (the Russian state-owned 24/7 English-language satellite TV news channel). He has also acted in American, British and Russian movies and TV series, been dialogue coach to an international cast of film actors and actresses on another film, practiced lifestyle journalism, copy-editing corporate brochures and publications, and working with the Ministry of Education on an interactive multimedia English language teaching course, so the next generation of Russian schoolchildren will sound just like him. He took a year out of Russia to run two projects for the United Nations Development Programme in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, dealing with the socio-economic redevelopment of post-civil war zones. Previously he has been an academic, farmer, small businessman, public servant, editor/journalist and, briefly, the chief executive-designate of an African safari and hunting company. Probably nearer the truth than one could possibly imagine, Garkhov's Diary is a satire that thoroughly entertains from first to last and leaves one wanting more. The motley range of characters range from the delusional and insecure diarist to dotty Scottish aristocrats and sentimental terminators all caught up in a rollicking search for power and money, and yes, sex. Hard to put down!

The horrible truth

Garkhov is a monster. A Russian oligarch who has made billions from fertiliser, he is a product of the Yeltsin years when the Russian economy was systematically looted by unscrupulous operators who got themselves into the right place at the right time. Garkhov apparently has little talent except for opportunism and survival.

But Garkhov is more than a monster; he is also an odd mixture of innocence and cynicism. He blunders through Stephen Dewar's wonderful book with most of the typical oligarch's trappings - yachts, mistresses, security thugs, American financial advisers, a son at Eton, the inability to give anyone sexual satisfaction.

Will Garkhov succeed in his attempt to become an old Etonian? Will he find out the difference between a grouse shoot and a film shoot? Will he penetrate Britain's sexual desert? Will he see why his mistress doesn't like to be called "my little piggie"? I laughed helplessly. Yet there are moments when this pathetic creature almost makes you weep.

At the fictional diary's end, Stephen Dewar has included a sharp diagnosis of some of the grimmer aspects of Putin's Russia like the Beslan seige. Now this wise and very funny book should be brought up to date in a new edition. Few writers have evoked the post-Soviet nightmare so well.
