Don't Use It When Your Hands Are Wet!

I really wanted to like this product, but alas will be returning it. I was initially excited to use it, to press both garlic and ginger and upon a preliminary review, the garlic press appeared to be made well. Interestingly, the silicone grips are located on the inside of the handles and not on the outside… some sort of aesthetic or something… not sure. So, a major mistake, was using it while my hands were freshly washed and still very damp. The garlic press slipped around in my hands while pressing it and the garlic went flying in various indiscriminate places… not good. Also, I experienced the same as another customer in that the garlic oozed out of the top and sides (on the inside), instead of through the press holes. What little garlic did seep through the press holes, I had to scrap off. Lastly, when it came to pressing ginger… the experience was worse. The press essentially juiced the small pieces of ginger, and what little (very little) seeped through the press holes, had to be scraped off with a knife. It was a bizarre experience. Cleaning the press was not a breeze. I found pieces of ginger stuck in the press holes and as other customers mentioned, a small cleaning tool was not included. So, with pressing both garlic and ginger, I had to get my hands dirty, and dig out the remaining pressed residual pieces throughout the process. Just some things to think about when using this press.

This garlic press feels good in my hand. It’s solid with a good weight to it and it feels like it should last well. I’ve not seen it rust or anything yet, so so far so good. It actually cleans much easier than the other IKEA press I broke years ago by pressing ginger through it (bad idea). Cleaning it is quite easy, which is very welcome. I’ve had it about two months or so. So, to the problem. First, I am not a garlic press expert. As such, I don’t really have the vocabulary necessary to describe this well (a picture is indeed worth a thousand words). So here goes: the back ridged part of the press that pushes the garlic into the round receptacle to be crushed through the tiny holes- that back part- is not machined to a tight enough tolerance. This means that there is a significant gap between the edge of the back part and the round receptacle into which it fits. Why does this matter? When you press the garlic, much of the clove will actually push back out through this gap and avoid getting crushed. After crushing a couple cloves, you will have a good bit of garlic that has pushed pack through the gap and you have to wrangle it together to the middle of the receptacle and repress it. After few cloves, you will end up with enough garlic to repress to make nearly another whole clove of pressed garlic. It accumulates fast, and frankly, it’s annoying, and it slows me down. Plus, then I have to put my fingers in the almost but not fully crushed garlic. Half the reason I use a press is so that I don’t have to get garlic all over my hands and deal with the smell. I’m not sure why they designed it this way, but overall it takes what would be a 5-star product and reduces it to 3 stars.

I am absolutely thrilled and grateful that I took the chance and ordered this amazing garlic press. It is a total game changer. It truly expels nearly every last particle of garlic and is SO EASY TO CLEAN! It is the best kitchen product ever. I’m buying one for everyone in my family and will get a few extra for hostess gifts. I don’t normally get excited about kitchen products but I have been through many, many garlic presses, all of which had major annoying flaws. I have finally found my forever garlic press!!!

No More Tedious Chopping and Dicing

With this garlic press, all you have to do is peel the garlic cloves and drop them in, squeeze the handles, and voila! The result is a fine paste, perfect for stir frying and sautéing or whatever cooking method you're using. Occasionally a piece of clove will extrude up around the outside of the press, especially if you put multiple cloves in. I just open the press and push the wayward bits back in. The only drawback I can think of with this gadget is that sometimes to clean it I have to use a toothpick to remove all the bits from inside the press. But that's unavoidable, and a minor inconvenience. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

This garlic press is by far the best I have found. I do not have the strength I once had in my hands and had a problem using other presses. The Zulay is well made, of good quality and the handles are designed in a way that allows me to use without pain in my hands. Since the design allows me to apply more pressure than I could with other garlic presses I have used, I actually get better results. Don't be fooled by the smaller size of this product. You have the same amount of room for your garlic cloves and in my opinion, the overall design produces better.

I’ve had this a few weeks now, some reviews said the hinge can be a bit delicate but I find it strong enough. I also wash it straight after use and stand it to drain upside down ^ so the hinge drains and dries. I think it’s a good quality garlic press and would buy one for my daughter as well.
