Advanced Training Meets All-day Activity Tracking
Forerunner 920XT packs a fleet of high-end training features into a sleek watch that is wet suit-friendly and about 15 percent lighter than its predecessor, the Forerunner 910XT. It boasts a high-resolution color display; flexible, hinged bands and a watch mode, so you can wear it all day. The activity tracking feature measures your steps, sleep and calories burned all day, giving you a more complete picture of your daily activity.
Whether you’re training at the pool or out in the open water, Forerunner 920XT captures detailed swim metrics, including distance, pace, stroke count, stroke rate, and swolf score. The drill logging feature allows you to easily log swim drills and kick sets at the pool, and the 2 types of rest timers keep you pushing off the wall on time. Use time alerts to help you hold your pace, or distance alerts to let you know when a set is over. There are even alerts for calories and stroke rate.
Crank Up Your Training
The 920XT is compatible with sensors such as speed, cadence and heart rate to provide advanced training capabilities for your cycling workouts. It can also display power metrics when paired with ANT+ power meters, including the Vector line of single- and dual-sensing pedal options.
If you train with heart rate and a power meter, Forerunner 920XT can derive your VO2 max estimate for cycling to help monitor changes in your fitness. The color gauge shows how you rank compared to other athletes in your age group. Another feature that lets you see how you measure up to others is Garmin Connect segments. Once your ride’s done and uploaded to Garmin Connect, you can see where you stand on the segment leaderboard.
Perfect Your Running Form
Forerunner 920XT helps you train for optimal running form when used with the HRM-Run or HRM-Tri monitor. This pairing allows the 920XT to report 6 running dynamics metrics: cadence (total steps per minute), stride length (length of your stride from 1 footfall to the next), ground contact time (how much time your foot spends on the ground during each step), ground contact time balance (the left/right balance of the time each foot spends on the ground), vertical oscillation (amount of “bounce” in your step) and vertical ratio (ratio of vertical oscillation to stride length). The 920XT also has a metronome feature with vibration and audible alerts to guide your cadence training.
Advanced Heart Rate-based Features
When used with a heart rate monitor, Forerunner 920XT offers additional features that can dial in your recovery status as well as your racing potential. First is a recovery check, which is a real-time indication of your recovery state within the first several minutes of an aerobic activity. After the activity, the 920XT provides a recovery time indicating how long before you should attempt another hard effort. The 920XT can also estimate your VO2 max for running when used with HRM-Run and for cycling when used with a heart rate monitor and power meter. Based on that data, it can predict your running race times for several distances.
Continue to train with heart rate underwater using HRM-Tri or HRM-Swim. HRM-Swim is ideal for pool training with its unique, non-slip design that stays in place, even during wall push offs. For training and racing across all 3 disciplines, HRM-Tri’s soft strap design is as comfortable out of water as it is underwater.
Now your brick workouts and race activities have a whole new view in Garmin Connect, our free online community where you can save, plan and share your efforts. When you complete an activity using a multisport activity profile on your device, each leg and transition time is stored in one combined file for easy review and sharing. Individual tabs let you access detailed data for each leg.
There are multiple ways to sync your data with Garmin Connect. The 920XT can transfer the data through the Garmin Connect Mobile app on your smartphone using Bluetooth technology. You can also set up one or more Wi-Fi hot spots, and the 920XT will automatically sync with Garmin Connect when in range. Or sync with your desktop through a USB connection.
Pair the 920XT with your smartphone and the Garmin Connect Mobile app for additional capabilities that can help you stay connected during your cycling and running workouts or races. The live tracking feature lets you invite followers using email or social media so they can see your stats and location on a map in real time. Smart notifications let you see email, text and other alerts on your watch when paired with your compatible Android or Apple device. When the 920XT is paired with your phone and the Garmin Connect Mobile app, your completed workouts can instantly upload.

The watch is no fashion statement, but it has a nice display and reasonable buttons to cycle through the modes. I have worn this for the past month running, playing soccer, swimming, and biking, and it has performed accurately in all pursuits.
It took a while for me to realize that the heart rate data would only be downloaded to the watch once you are out of the water, but just a few seconds of standing in the shallow end had the watch showing current heart rate again.
The battery seems pretty good. I have used it up to 1.5 hours (heart rate, bluetooth, and GPS on) with only about a 10-15% drain.
It connects to a paired phone and wifi easily, and your whole workout is up for display on the garmin web site as soon as you are done.
The displays are pretty useful (distance, calories, VO2max, running efficiency - bounce and contact time, GPS path), and I assume (hope) the website will continue to improve.
The phone vibrates with important information like recovery rate, miles (running), even texts from your phone. You can also download simple apps (e.g., there's on for referees to keep score/time in a soccer game)
The only nit I have is that it ALSO vibrates when it makes and loses GPS and phone connections. I really don't care if I've lost contact with my phone, so don't notify me with the same urgency as a text or other workout related info.
It's not cheap, but I really can't think of a fitness need this does not fill for the non-Olympic athlete.
I wear mine as an everyday watch. I like having the ability to get/read emails and text messages, which is very convenient when in meetings. It's like having an Apple watch on steroids. The only downside is the price. It's expensive and the only way one can buy the black and gray model is to buy the triathlon bundle, which is $600
The black HR strap feels small on your chest and snug but there are edges around the sensors that actually dig into your skin and become uncomfortable. I still rate it higher than the old 910xt strap as this doesn't fail as much on the bike during very windy/cold days. Have yet to swim with it yet.
The altimeter started to not work 1 month in and after an email conversation with support, they recommended sending it in for repair. They ended up just sending me a refurbished one back that was all scratched up on the face plate. I downgraded my review to 1 star from this. Horrible product support to send me this one. Then I had to argue to get them to send me a new one. Having this one break after 1 month and they sending me a refurbished one was unacceptable. After a shipping error (on USPS), finally got the new replacement and of course it was a different color. The Blue/Black instead of the Gray/Black which is the color I bought and wanted. Their service department does the bare minimum and does not respect loyal customers.
Also, bought the bike speed/cadence sensors and they shipped a dead battery.
