VIRB 360 ACTION CAMERA
Top reviews from other countries
The Virb's cradle uses a standard GoPro mount and there's no additional casing needed to waterproof it, as expected it uses a micro sd card (make sure it's a fast one, I've had no issue with Sandisk Extreme cards) and it uses micro USB to charge. There's a small screen on top enough to show the settings with three buttons and a handy record switch on the side which when pushed forward will start the camera recording regardless of whatever state it's in. There is voice control but I find it a bit inconsistent.
The 2D videos the Garmin Virb Edit software produces is extremely impressive as it can take advantage of the huge field of view, GPS and accelerometer data to stabilise the video. On fast bumpy and twisty trails even when the bike is taking tight corners, the resulting video looks unbelievably smooth and at times it looks like a drone has filmed it. As with previous Virb cameras the software makes it easy to add various metrics to the video which can be placed anywhere on the 360 degree sphere.
Unfortunately I've never found a way to incorporate the video into any workflow, once Virb Edit has finished with the video anything else done with it completely destroys the quality of the video. Uploading the video straight to YT looks awful and putting it through a video editor makes it even worse whereas the same process with a standard camera looks great. Potentially it's possible to work with the raw 360 footage but the none of the useful features from the Virb software which are needed to stabilise the footage can be used.
I don't know if it's limited to my Virb 360 or not but this one is chronically unreliable, sometimes it works perfectly but other times it won't. Today I charged the camera up and checked the SD card was good but when I took it out on the trail it powered up fine, showed the memory card and battery were good then immediately powered back down again.
Given the camera is recording from two sensors the batterylife is reasonable, it's managed up to around an hour which is similar to standard action cameras and the battery is easily replaceable if needed to extend the runtime. Similarly the camera does burn through memory cards but high capacity high speed cards are not that expensive these days.
Unsurprisingly I regret buying the Virb 360 especially given the high price and couldn't recommend it at any price, I'm not going to waste any more time on mine.
