The case is large. It measures 4-1/2 x 6-inches on the outside not including the bit extra for the clasp. It is made of a leather-look material.
The case has two strong magnets for the closure. One has to go be careful inserting or removing the GPS to avoid being surprised by it snapping onto a magnet. To me, having to deal with this is very annoying.
Shake the case with the GPS inside and the device skids alarmingly from side to side. That's not too bad in itself but if the case is held with the opening at the bottom the GPS will drop down so that both corners are exposed to damage. If it strikes a hard surface in this orientation the GPS will be prone to damage. I was hoping the case would cover completely. Unfortunately, it doesn't.
Since it's too large to carry around, I don't see what purpose this case serves. Should I manage to get it stuffed into an oversized pocket, I'm still not happy with the idea of having a pocketful of magnetized material. I don't want to be on a trip and suddenly have a bank card go dead on me.
It is just as easy, and safer from theft, to just take the entire GPS down and put the cable, cradle, and GPS out of sight in the trunk. I think a bag is the best complement for this GPS since it is not pocket-friendly anyway with all the magnets.
1) The case is big, very big, much bigger than the 3597 which is quite annoying. I'd like Garmin to make a case with a smaller form factor that fits their 5 inch models snugly.
2) The powerful magnet in the clasp often snags the powerful magnet on the back of the 3597....which is annoying but certainly not a dealbreaker.
All around, this is a great case though, I've gotten used to the size, and I've adapted to opening the clasp in a manner that prevents it from coming into contact with the back of the device.
What I regret is the lack of an internal pocket to hold additional cards. I travel a lot to the US, live in Central America, regularly go to Western Europe and will soon spend significant time in South East Asia.
This means three additional cards with maps, and there is no place to store them except the one in the unit.
If you only use it in the US or with a single external card, this is OK. Otherwise, well, good luck.
