The thing I like about this is it’s easier to just stick this in your pocket and get a quick reading rather than fumble around with the laser. Feel bad when I’m in a foursome and going to the bag every shot to get the laser, like I’m holding everyone up.
I also like to get the front and back of the green yardage. Then I know my min/max clubs depending on the pin placement.
It has several features, but I only care about the distance and greens front/middle/back readings.
Played a round with a friend of mine and he ended up buying one for himself.
The manual is just OK, they leave out some pretty useful information in my view. For example, they never explain how to get back to the distance to green page after you use moving the pin, measure a shot, layup/dogleg - I assume it's the back button, but I did that once last week and somehow missed the screens to enter scoring data for that hole (had to enter manually on Garmin Connect when I got home). And if you get off a hole while playing, I'm not sure how to get back to the right hole and resume distance info. I assume the up down keys and then OK, but not sure if that worked or not.
And the Amazon page clearly shows a G10 screen with yards for Driver, 5-iron, Sand Wedge - 2nd image on my page. I have no idea how to get to that info, it's not in either manual that I can find and I haven't seen it on my G10.
And finally, Garmin Connect is a little unintuitive. And it would be helpful to know where scorecards are stored - on the G10 (and only the last scorecard is kept) or are all of them on my PC thru Connect?
But all in all, it does what I most wanted from the unit, so I give it 4 stars though it would seemingly have been easy to make it a 5 star device.
Top international reviews
All in all I would recommend this to anyone looking for a simple golf GPS gadget.
Wanted yardage gps for a while but didn't want to pay loads for one. At the price this was, thought i'd take the chance and go for it.When i 1st opened package thought that device was too small, but had no problems reading everything on screen and for me does everything required.
1st time i used it was for a weekend trip to the belfry where we were playing 2 rounds over 2 days and it stayed charged for both rounds without need for recharging. Charging is easy though and usb lead fits into my plug that i use to charge my phone so no need to buy seperate charger.
Easy to follow on screen layout to quickly find distance to front/centre/back of greens and to hazards as well.
Would definetly recommend
I have always struggled to judge distances, especially when getting closer to the green, and before my SkyCaddie, I relied heavily on course planners, and course yardage markers. I moved to GPS assistance to help in the process, and was very impressed with the technology especially as it still gave yardages to the green from anywhere on the course. Very useful after those errant tee shots we all experience. But the Garmin failed to deliver.
For example, I refer to two par fours at my golf course. Playing a second shot to the 3rd, yardage displayed to the centre was 83 yards. After an overshoot, I decided to pace the yardage. 71 yards, a discrepancy of 12 yards. Second shot on the 7th, displayed yardage 124 to the centre. After committing to the shot and hitting long, Garmin is now displaying 107 yards to the centre.
I consider myself a reasonable player (HCP 8) and I needed something I could trust and sadly the Garmin very quickly lost any confidence I had in it originally.
On a positive note, Amazon were great in accepting the return with a full refund with no questions asked.
