Garmin Connect is pretty cool to see how far you hit each shot, the direction it went, etc.
UPDATE: Called Garmin Customer service and they ran me through some steps in order to get course updates via Garmin Express on the watch. You have to delete some files such as courses in parts of the world you won't need, in order to free up some space in order to download the updates. Also, asked about being able to edit the club selection list for shot tracking and they said its not possible right now, but maybe with a future update.
last note on the reviews, I was hesitant to buy this watch with a lot of negative reviews However, dug deeper and noticed they were all from 2016. All the 4-5 star reviews were from 2017, so i went ahead and bought. Whatever the issues were in 2016 they have resolved and the watch works as advertised. Buy the watch!
Opened the box and connected the S20 to my laptop via the included USB cable. I already have a Garmin account setup and the software on my computer because I also own a Vivoactive HR as my everyday activity tracker. It updated to the latest 2.80 firmware pretty quickly, then it started on updating the course database. This was fairly slow, but not grueling. Took maybe 15-20 to update the courses. I let the S20 finish charging and then powered it down since I'm not planning on wearing it as an everyday watch.
This morning I went and play 18 holes at a local course. This gave me a chance to test out the S20. I went through the process of selecting the course I was playing on and acquiring a GPS signal to the S20. This process took maybe a total of 1 minute and was largely hands off. Where I was most impressed was on the course. The yardages were accurate. Within a yard of the course markers at all times. I used the AutoShot and club tracking feature and both were basically flawless. It automatically detected every shot I took short of green side chips and putts (which Garmin says it won't detect so I wasn't surprised by this). When you walk onto the green it automatically pops up a prompt asking you to enter your score, number of putts, and whether you hit the fairway. That whole process takes 10 seconds total.
Once the finish my 18 holes I hit the end round button and tell it to save the round to my watch. I then opened up Garmin Connect to sync all of my round info to my account. What was really cool was looking at the hole by hole scoring and seeing the distance I hit every shot, where on the hole it landed, and what club I used. It also shows you the score card from the course, number of fairways hit, average putts per hole, and average score for all of your rounds. I am a sucker for stats and data so I was really intrigued by this info.
I would recommend this to anyone who asked. My personal experience has been a great one so far, and I've thankful that it seems that Garmin has fixed the issues that seem to have plagued earlier firmware versions. I'm hoping that Garmin only improves the S20 and am looking forward to seeing what features they adding the future.
