Good for basic stats, but NOT for navigation

I bought the Edge 130 after using an Edge 25 for about 3 years to upgrade the navigation function. While the 130 provides all the basic data (distance, cadence, speed, HR, etc.) in a clean, crisp format, the navigation is very unreliable. The 130 continuously misses turns and has sent me in the wrong direction many times. Without a base map on the device, you need to get on a maps app with your phone to find the way back to your route. At the end of the day, you’re better off with a cue sheet.

To be honest, I would recommend buying the cheaper Edge 25 if you’re after basic data because it has nearly all the same functions (25 does not have live elevation tracking) and the 520 or 520 Plus if you’re after navigation. I am returning this for a 520 Plus.

Don't buy this product (Garmin Edge 130)

I bought the Garmin 130 GPS enabled cycling computer from Amazon on 06-14-19 ... ($199.99) .... On 08-26-19, while I was on a ride, It froze up completely, with the time, distance and speed, of the ride I was on still visible on the screen. It would not allow me to reset it or enter any other information, or even turn the power off.... It was completely froze. That was only two and a half months after my purchase.... The Amazon warranty expired on 07-15-19.

I contacted Amazon support that same day ... (via online chat with "Jeffery") ... upon returning from my ride, to see if perhaps they could give me some idea about what the problem was and how I might correct it or get it working again. The Amazon representative "Jeffery" was doing all he could to help me, but ultimately he wasn't able to solve the problem.... He advised me that he would contact the Garmin manufacturing technicians and have them contact me direct via telephone and see if they might be able to help me. The Amazon representative "Jeffery" also assured me he would follow up with me the next day to see if Garmin had in fact contacted me and if they were helpful. That was all he could do...

The Garmin representative called me this morning (08-27-19) .... What a total and complete waste of time that was... He was useless !!! I couldn't hear him over the phone because it was so soft .... I told him multiple times that I wasn't able to hear him.... he then did something that enable me to hear him slightly better, but he talked so fast I couldn't understand anything he was saying. I again told him multiple time to please repeat himself, that he was talking too fast, and he wasn't speaking loud enough or distinctly enough... His response ??? He hung up on me !!! Yeah ... He hung up on me and didn't even say "goodbye" !!! What a jerk !!!

Let me warn you, If my experience with Garmin technical assistance is the normal way they operate, I assure you, they are absolutely no help !!!! So don't expect any. Not only that, they are rude !!! There are other products out there, and for me personally, this experience with Garmin has definitely assured me, that I should be looking elsewhere for any future purchases...

The up side of all this was that the "Jeffery" the Amazon representative was true to his word and he did call me back to see if I had received any help from Garmin..... I told this whole story to "Jeffery" and he expressed his regret about what had happened.... He asked me to remain on hold for a couple minutes, and when he returned, "Jeffery" told me that Amazon would be sending me a new Garmin Edge 130, (even though Amazon's warranty was past due)..... and that I should send my old frozen up one, back to them....

Bottom line ... Amazon and "Jeffery" came through and provided truly excellent service, even when they really didn't have to. I truly appreciated that..... Regarding Garmin, certainly their technical support ... in my opinion, it sucks big time !!! So you might want to keep that in mind the next time you're looking for GPS or other Garmin product.... There are other options out there and I recommend you explore them.... I know for sure I will.

09/16/19: UPDATE .... As I mentioned in the above review.... I received a new Edge 130 from Amazon as a replacement for the Edge 130 I had paid for previously.... the one that lasted less than 3 months.... I returned the old Edge 130 after receiving the new replacement from Amazon. My new replacement Edge 130 has now ceased to function.... IT LASTED LESS THAN A MONTH !!! ... IT FAILED ON MY BIKE RIDE YESTERDAY, AND FAILED EXACTLY LIKE THE FIRST ONE !!! I'm not going to go back and ask Amazon to replace it, but I am going to ask for a refund of the $199.95 I paid for it...... Again.... DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT .... THE EDGE 130 IS WORTHLESS AND YOU'LL BE WASTING BOTH YOUR TIME AS WELL AS YOUR MONEY....

Battery Dies So Quickly it's useless

I so, so wanted to love this little thing. I had a Garmin 500 for years and years. It worked rain, shine, cold, wet, hot. It would last 15 hours no problem. I loved that device so much and when it finally died I quickly went back to Garmin to get a replacement. What a mistake. No idea what happened to this company, but as much as I wanted to love the 130 without a decent battery it's worthless. I should have returned it earlier and now I'm suck with it. What a total disappointment.

If the battery actually worked I'd give it 5 stars. Everything else is great. But when you are riding around with a blank screen because the battery is dead the other features don't matter.

The screen is to small and won’t do left right power and it is just not good. The battery life is the most disappointing thing about this unit. I am barely getting 4 hours of life out of a full charge and forget about it if you are using the back light or navigation features.

Decent hardware, typical crappy Garmin device firmware. . This device has the same bug that the Garmin Edge 520 had when it first came out: after a long pause in a ride all your sensors stop working for the rest of the ride. It surprises me how a product release could have been so careless as to repeat the same bug as its predecessor?? (which eventually was fixed)

Also, 7 hours into a ride battery was down to 30%. I highly doubt it will last its claimed 15hr. You can't even see the battery percent on the default firmware -- you have to install a ConnectIQ app!

I purchased the garmin on sale in April. Keep your eyes open for a sale, you can save up to 100 buck (compared to todays price). This is a great unit. I had a bit of a difficult time figuring out how to set the data screens. I just couldn't get the number of fields I wanted. Manual is almost useless and a lot of vidoes on line were not that helpful. Finally figured it out and in retrospect its not hard but it sure took me a while. Anyway, once past that, I have to say I am very happy with the product. I have close to 500 km on it and I am happy with my purchase. I don't have data on my phone nor do I need the phone to use the garmin. I get all the information from the garmin and its at my fingertips. I connect the garmin to my computer at home and I can download my rides and info. The garmin is easy to use (once you get the set up done) and you can change screens while riding if you like. I initially had it on scroll mode so the screens were constantly changing. I ended that and put all the stuff I really wanted to see on 1 page. If I wanted other stuff, I hit the side/bottom button and I then can access additional data. As for battery life, I never let it go down to next to nothing. I get 3 or 4 one hour rides in and I see that the battery indicator still has 2 bars remaining. I have a cadence sensor hooked up as well and the garmin easily detected the sensor. Really like this unit!. Even with 7 pieces of information on my main data screen, I can easily see/read the info off the garmin while riding. It’s not “busy” or too small to read if you glance down.

Lo único que no me gustó, es que cuando haces el display extendido con un reloj Garmin (en mi caso el Forerunner 735xt) -por cuestiones de multideporte-, por diseño, por default y sin poder ajustarlo, el Edge 130 parte la pantalla en 2: en la mitad superior aparece el tiempo total y el tiempo de vuelta (no se pueden cambiar estos campos), y en la mitad de abajo aparecen los datos que traes en el display del reloj, los cuales si puedes cambiar. No he hecho rodadas de más de 5 horas para probar la duración de la batería con todos los sensores conectados (Velocidad, cadencia, ritmo cardiaco, luz trasera).

Ok so first of all this device is amazing. Its loaded with lots of features. You dont need speed sensor for it to measure your speed, it will calculate your speed with the help of gps. Some features require heart rate sensors and speed and cadence sensors which you have to buy separately. Also the recordings were very accurate but if you are planning to use it in india one thing you need to know is that you wont be able to create your own course in most parts of India due to limited popularity data available. So overall it's a good device has lots of features and accuracy is perfect

I was searching for a simple bicycle computer that provided speed, cadence, distance, phone alerts and orientation. The Garmin Edge 130 fulfills this purpose really well. It is well constructed, resists water and dirt very well and the out-of-the box mount is sturdy.

The interface of this device is via physical buttons around the edge. The layout is simple and intuitive if you make the small effort to become familiar with it.

I believe there is a basic bread crumbs map function but I do not bother using it. I don't even think the larger bicycle computers that I looked at in store have a large enough screen to make map functions viable, in my opinion.

The screen is easy to read in full daylight and the layout is very customisable.

The Garmin Connect application has been very easy to use and works reliably. It updates automatically and syncs with Strava to auto-upload activities.

The only issue I've experienced with this device is the battery life. It does have a simple display so you'd expect the battery capacity to be something like an old Nokia but unfortunately the battery chosen for the Edge 130 is way too small. I would probably only get 4-5 hours of continuous use from this device, so I charge it up every day after finishing my commute (ideally all lithium battery devices should be charged as frequently as possible for optimal battery health so this is not a big deal).

To be fair, my Edge 130 is synced with a speed sensor and cadence sensor, as well as my phone and GPS. That's a lot of communication and it's the reason why the battery life seems unimpressive. I still think Garmin should have offered a slightly larger battery - I would have given this 5 Stars if they had...
