Advanced Fitness Metrics
Every fēnix Chronos watch is packed with sophisticated training features to help monitor your form and fitness. The VO2 max estimator crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability, to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute. Track changes to see your fitness gains and to compare with your peers. Other fitness metrics include recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check plus a race predictor, which estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number.
Altimeter, Barometer and Compass
fēnix Chronos comes equipped with ABC sensors to provide relevant, real-time situational information. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. The 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing, whether you’re moving or not.
Smart notifications through the fēnix Chronos watch let you receive emails, texts and alerts right on your watch — whether you're on the trail, on the golf course or simply away from your desk. The watch receives the wireless signal from a compatible smartphone and lets you know you have a message by displaying the text on its own screen whenever you’re ready to read it.
Navigate Your Way
fēnix Chronos provides comprehensive navigation and tracking to guide you on and off the beaten path using GPS plus ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensor capabilities. There’s also a TracBack feature to help you navigate back to your starting point the same way you came. Plus, built-in sensors provide information on heading, elevation and weather changes.

With many friends owning Apple Watches I was intrigued by the concept however put off by the necessity to move your wrist to see the time, and the short battery life. I wanted a watch that looked like a watch, constantly visible, but loaded with the applications and capabilities.
The Fenix is big and bulky, kind of tough for someone with skinny wrists like me. It can feel heavy after a while. However, it looks good with the added plus of flexible configuration of the watch face - the hands, look, analog/digital and a variety of data views. I could not figure out how to do a dual time view - the one I have insists on showing UTC as the alternative time. I am very impressed with the battery life - this is one of the strongest points of the watch. Using it fairly frequently I have to charge perhaps once every 4-5 days which is better than my iphone.
The step counter appears to correlate reasonably well with other devices such as my iPhone or a Fitbit and shows good consistency. Likewise the heart rate monitor looks to be accurate.
The altimeter is accurate if you are outside and hiking or perhaps cycling. If you change altitude suddenly, for example in an elevator, a high speed train or an airplane then it can get confused. I understand the device is designed to be used and hence be most accurate outside so accept the fact that use outside that design parameter stretches its capabilities.
To summarize, I enjoy the great look, the versatility and functionality which I am still exploring. As technology progresses I am confident that Garmin will find ways to slim this down and increase the fashion appeal even more. I applaud their creativity and direction, and once again want to give a "thumbs up" for their customer support.
The resolution of the screen is really not a match with the images. Its so pixelated it is disappointing.
The Heart rate was actually pretty accurate and the lag was not so bad you couldn't do HIIT but again the weight, just not comfortable.
