I would like to respond to some confusion created in other reviews.
The 740s has excellent built in maps useful for navigation. These internal maps can be transferred to an SD card for use at home with your computer with Homeport software. You do not have to transfer the map every time, but you DO have to have the SD card plugged into your computer to use Homeport.

IN ADDITION to the built in maps, one may purchase cards with more detail and more features. THIS card must be plugged into the chart plotter at all times that you are using it (if you want the better charts). THIS card may be copied to another SD card to use with your computer at home with Homeport software. The copied card may not be used in your chartplotter or any other chartplotter because of encryption, but works just fine in your computer with Homeport.

IN ADDITION you may use any SD card to transfer routes, waypoints, ect. to and from your chartplotter/computer.

It is an excellent unit, and I use it often when fishing. It is a miracle when navigating our shallow waters when boating at night. It is accurate, reliable, and easy to read in daylight or at night. The screen automatically varies brightness. It has a touch screen menu and you can adjust the sensitivity of the touchscreen. It comes with a bracket mount and a flush mount kit. You must purchase the transducer separately.

I love this GPS-Sounder. I bought it from epal.com on sale with a free in hull mount transducer. It has all the features even the professional Captains need. The only negative is it uses magnets to hold the sim card door closed, so you cannot mount it within 32 inches of your compass.(Read installation guide) I don't use my compass now, why would I need it with a GPS, but the magnets do cause true north reading errors.

Garmin has out done themselves with this one. View and clarity is great, easy to read in the sun, nice back lighting at night. You can surface mount it, or flush mount it. Includes templates for both. Accurate depth and speed readings, sounder has good images. Lowrance probably has better sounder qualities, but this is a close second.

If you want a GPS/Sounder that will last a long time with very few issues, its worth the investment.

Love the device. But, if you plan to try to use the built-in or puchased charts with HomePort software be prepared to be frustrated and unhappy. You'll hate Garmin's clunky software and there's a pretty good chance that you're going to damage your downloaded charts as you learn to use the HomePort interface. When it comes to software Garmin makes protection of their revenue stream a priority over usabilty. Device charts can be updated but no one-time update is available for charts. You get the chart versions available when unit was built. Potentially a safety issue. The unit is touchscreen and affordable, but next time I'll spend more time considering alternatives.

They are misleading the retail price and the add makes it sound like it comes with the equipment for the sounder. That is xtra!

I investigated this unit thoroly before I bought it. All reviews were very positive.
So far, I have installed it and networked it (NMEA 0183) to my Simrad AP25 Autopilot and my Furuno 582 depthsounder.
It is working very well but I am still learning to use it.

I am impressed by its ease of use and think it will be a real asset to my fishing and cruising.

I fish the marshes of south Louisiana. I purchased their map chip for this area for detailed maps because the navigating the cuts and bayous is critical. What I discovered is that the map overlays for a given area are so DARK that they are virtually useless. Who in the world designed this feature? It is obvious that some tech dude, who's never been outdoors, developed these screens indoors with no outside light. Pull their map overlay up in the daytime and you can't see a bloody thing! For such a high price you'd think that having maps that are usable isn't too much to expect.

The unit itself is user friendly, and has lots of cute features, but give me the Lowrance maps for accuracy on the water.

This may help- I recently emailed and called you guys regarding a issue, this techs and email people didn't have a solution for me- this is what happened. I bought a 740 s I had a 60 scx hand held , I transferred my saved tracks to the 740s. I went out on my boat and every track shows up on the map( all saved tracks) I could only get rid of them by turning tracks off but then later found out my path was also off and I wasn't leaving a track. My problem was I didn't want to turn tracks on and see a hundred lines all over the place. I feel as my hand held it is better that all saved tracks don't show up when tracks is on only if I ask youse a saved track does it come up... So anyways what i told the guy on the phone is I want to be tracked and not see all these tracks and I don't want to have to color every track and hide them because I shouldn't have to and what if I wanted to use a saved track in a certain color would I need to turn back on that color? They didn't have a answer/ so what I found out on my own was I can give colors to my saved tracks turn them all off and when I use one I don't need to turn that color on it will just show up in that pink highlighted color and now I can have a clear map with tracks as long as my track is red or a color that is not hidden. Please inform your crew that you can hide all tracks with the colors( which they knew) but when following a saved track you won't have to turn that color back in which they didn't know. ( anyways would've a lot easier if it was just alittle simplistic like the handheld - just alittle glitch I think.

Thankyou, Steve purser
(I love the unit its great, just that one thing bothered me)
