I spent the better part of two months researching a device that could replace my Apple Watch First Generation and included the following features: step tracking, sleep tracking, longer battery life, GPS for running and other cardio based activities, comfort on the wrist, and wrist based hear rate functionality. I initially had my sights set on the Garmin fēnix 3 HR - Gray (Certified Refurbished). But the footprint and battery life weren't up to specs for 24/7 wear. So I compromised with a solution that included two devices: the Garmin Vivoactive HR and the Garmin fēnix 3 HR - Gray (Certified Refurbished). The Withings device would be for everyday constant wear and handle the step tracking, sleep tracking, wrist based heart rate, and general activity monitoring. With a small frame, professional look, and 20+ day battery, it was perfect. Then the Garmin Vivoactive would handle all GPS based activities (i.e. running) and other aerobic activities (i.e. elliptical).
For monitoring those GPS activities, the Vivoactive fits comfortably on the wrist, catches the GPS satellite quickly, is easy to use (once you understand the Garmin UI), and highly programmable via the Garmin Connect App. Garmin Connect is an app that is cumbersome and not well laid out, but it provides a valuable treasure trove of data that can be useful from the beginning running enthusiast to a highly competitive training data hound. In sunlight, the display is easily viewed. That's not the case indoors or in low light.
Secondly, this device was ordered as "Certified Refurbished." It arrived in the specified time frame with all the original packaging and accessories. Upon inspection of the watch, it was cosmetically flawless. In short, the device was perfect and exactly as advertised. I have no qualms fully endorsing Amazon's Certified Refurbished products.
The obvious competitor to this is various models in the Fitbit line and this does a few things better that I like. I primarily bought this for tracking intensity of workouts and HR training and trying to gamify the bit of getting off my duff and running around a bit
HR monitor - Pretty solidly accurate under exercise when worn a little snug. Connects pretty easily to a chest strap but this tracked close enough it didn't seem to matter too much. The chest strap is more consistent at tracking sudden changes in HR such as starting a sprint or cooling off but the watch seems to catch on pretty quickly and seems more than usable by itself.
GPS/Baro - This is really great and I think is pretty uncommon in these watches. You can track an entire run or bike or whatever without carrying your phone because it doesn't need a paired GPS and it will sync back up when you get it close to your phone. Pulling up your session on the phone will give you a map of where you went, elevation, pace, etc. The watch will read out live pace computed from GPS which helps me a lot in trying to be more consistent.
Apps - There's a bunch of extra things you can put on it if you want, faces for the watch, different trackers, etc. There's a lot of customizability and the screen size means there's a lot of useful options.
The watch is extremely configurable, there are a number of predefined workout "modes" which basically force the watch to track HR much more frequently and may use GPS (you can disable either setting) or you can define your own. These are all logged to separate pages in the app and you can review a decent amount of information just on the watch itself. If you don't like having to do everything through your phone this is definitely a more independent watch. Also it does golf shot ranging! I've never tried it but it just sounds cool and I will at some point.
Some potential downsides - The screen is pretty low resolution and running some of the very loaded-up watch faces makes the watch noticeably slower to switch from the main screen. Garmin does this to make the battery last and it sure does, but if you want a pretty display you may want to look elsewhere. This one is extremely functional, but not pretty.
Most reviewers also seem to prefer the Fitbit app, I haven't used it personally but I rather like this one, I think if anything though there's just a lot of options that may be more inconvenient to get to and theirs is likely laid out better. Connect does give a boatload of information and telemetry and that's mostly what I'm after.
