As I type this I am well into just one of many phone calls to Garmin support that each and every time takes at least 30-60 minutes. Maybe more. Both 665's are dying with separate issues. The only good thing I will say about Garmin tech is at least when you finally do get through to support they are good about taking care of warranty and RMA.
But once again. Rip everything apart, box it up, pay for shipping, wait weeks, get it back, wire it back up...and hopefully it works for a little while any way.
What a PITA!
One unit has yet another bad digitizer and audio out jack doesn't work. The other will not recognize either XM puck. The cradle contacts even though clean do not hold their position and constantly crackle the sound and throw the unit out of whack. The cradle design has been an ongoing issue for the life of the Zumo product range. 4 out of 5 cradles that I have had have failed. The old 550 was readable in bright sun. These 665's are about useless on sunny days and forget about direct sun.
And when the cradle dies, one needs to rip apart the bike to re-wire everything. Again. Poor design and royally aggravating.Read more ›
That was after she had told me that she had considered getting one for me for Christmas of 2012, but stopped after
reading all of the negative reviews of the unit. Having had many Garmins before and loving each of them, I told
her that I wanted to try one anyway.
I must say, I have noted that there are a lot of negative reviews out there. There are complaints about units
being DOA or breaking after a very short period. Lots of horror stories. However, the other thing I noticed was
that all of the reviews were back in the early period of the 665's release. It obviously went through some very
bad growing pains.
I can tell you that, at least based on the performance of my unit, the growing pains seem to be over and Garmin
appears to have this unit ironed out. Now, that's not to say that it is perfect and that I don't have my nits
about it, but for the most part, it has been my experience that the 665LM works pretty much as advertised.
In fact, instead of talking about what I like about the unit (which is a LOT), I will tell you the things about it
that either you need to know, or that I do not like. For a baseline, I am coming off of a Garmin Nuvi 550, which
is another outdoor waterproof GPS from Garmin that I used on my motorcycle for years, and loved.
1) Screen brightness- If you read the Garmin hype, you will be lead to believe that you can see the screen under
all sunny conditions. This just isn't so. It IS somewhat better than my 550, but it can still be flushed out by
direct sunlight.Read more ›
1. The screen is too dark and not visible outdoors. I had brightness at 100% and I was out riding in overcast (sometimes sprinkles) day and I still could not see the screen well. Having to strain to read the screen is unsafe and I had NO PROBLEM seeing the screen on my 2008 zumo 450
2. The refresh on map. This is the same performance as my 2008 450... I would expect that a 2013 would have faster processing and NOT suffer from slow refresh of map while moving at 70mph.
3. When I dropped it once, the case chipped, showing black through grey.... a ruggadized motorcycle GPS this is not.
UPDATE: I returned this and got the 350LM... and I really really like the 350LM. It won't chip when you drop it, its sleeker and much nicer looking. The 350LM screen is very bright and read-able and it refreshes like I expected. I'm very happy I ended up with the 350LM instead of the 660/665LM.
