The new Garmin eTrex will fit in the palm of your hand, but its small size doesn't skimp on any features you've come to expect from Garmin. It has a 12-channel GPS receiver - eliminating worries about tight satellite lock in dense tree cover or in big waves. All buttons are located on either side of the unit, allowing for simple, one-handed operation that won't obstruct your view of the display. Stores up to 500 user waypoints with graphic icons. Garmin's exclusive TracBack feature reverses your track log to help you navigate your way back home. Animated graphics that will help you identify your marked waypoints quickly and easily. The eTrex is completely waterproof so it can take an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform. Runs for 18 hours on two AA batteries. Its bright yellow case will make it easy to find in a boat or backpack. Measures only 4.4"H x 2.0"W x 1.2"D.
The Garmin eTrex GPS is a remarkable GPS in a small, compact package. The eTrext takes the best features of a 12-paralle channel GPS receiver and puts them into a six-ounce, handheld device that is only four inches high and a mere two inches wide. The result is a powerful machine in the palm of your hand.

The antenna is also internal and the external power and data connector are protected as well. In addition to determining your location, the eTrex creates, names, and saves a location as an electronic waypoint in its memory -- up to 500 individual waypoints. And once you start moving, the GPS provides other data, like speed, direction of movement, time and distance to destination, and more.
In addition to these basic features, the eTrex provides one more critical benefit; peace of mind, because with GPS you know where you are, where you've been, and where you are going. And since you always know your way back home, you can concentrate on enjoy yourself outdoors, on the water, or wherever your travels may take you.

Top Customer Reviews
I'm a hiker, biker and a snowshoer. I don't need necessarily need mapping features and other more advanced features. I do need to know where I am and to see my tracks and to mark waypoints. The eTrex does this and a whole lot more. Although it is relatively simple, I am still discovering features and ways to use it. I would say that what you get out of it largely depends on what you put into it, in terms of learning and understanding what capabilities that the eTrex has.
I bought the combo adapter with both a serial connection for the computer and a cigarette lighter adapter for the car. I highly recommend this combo rather than buying the connectors separately. Remember, KISS! I looked at the bike handlebar mounting unit, but decided against it....I think I'm going to rig up my own mounting system for the bike. I do plan to buy computer mapping software at a later date, and the beauty is that you can overlay your tracks and routes on a computer map.
I really have no complaints. I'm having a blast with this. I have new confidence to head out into some yet unexplored territories of the place I live (Alaska) and not fear getting disoriented or lost, which I have done before.
For a first or only personal handheld GPS I highly recommend the eTrex. Forget the bells and whistles, the functionality you need for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing, climbing is in the eTrex!
I would recommend this gps to anyone that wants to go from point A to B to C, then be able to back track to those waypoints. If you want to be challenged with geocaching (I haves used it for those purposes already) it gives an arrival distance to about anywhere from 10-20 ft under the forest canopy. If you need greater accuracy then go with the eTrex H, which is the successor to this original model.
I give it five stars because it's exactly what I was looking for. Gets me from point A to B and back while hiking or kayaking, and I can do some geocaching with it as well. Also, it was delivered fast and it was in perfect condition while only costing me $40. Five Stars!
