From the manufacturer
eTrex 10 retains the core functionality, rugged construction, affordability and long battery life that made eTrex the most dependable GPS device available. We improved the user interface and added a worldwide basemap, paperless geocaching and support for spine-mounting accessories.
Rugged Handheld GPS with Enhanced Capabilities.
- Worldwide basemap
- 2.2" monochrome display, easy to read in any light
- GPS and GLONASS satellites for faster positioning
- Paperless geocaching
- 25-hour battery life with 2 AA batteries
eTrex supports geocaching GPX files for downloading geocaches and details straight to your unit. eTrex stores and displays key information, including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions, which means no more manually entering coordinates and paper printouts.
Keep Your Fix
With its high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix satellite prediction, eTrex locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons.
The eTrex series is the first-ever consumer-grade receivers that can track both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously. When using GLONASS satellites, a system developed by the Russian Federation, the time it takes for the receiver to 'lock on' to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using GPS.
Plan Your Next Trip

- This free trip-planning software even allows you to create Garmin Adventures that you can share with friends, family or fellow explorers.
- BaseCamp displays topographic map data in 2-D or 3-D on your computer screen, including contour lines and elevation profiles. It also can transfer an unlimited amount of satellite images to your device when paired with a BirdsEye Satellite Imagery subscription.

I'm also not looking to spend a lot on helping to prevent that situation again, so I did a quick search and came up with this unit. It doesn't do a lot and I don't need it to. Mark the camp, go for a hike, peace of mind that camp is "over there". See something cool, mark that too, find that cool thing again in the future.
It does other things, mimics my trail, but I haven't fully played around with everything. I only care about that one thing and it does that one thing well.
I think Garmin is a company that does not support their customers after the purchase. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing and people all over the web can't seem to figure this GPS out. The user manual you receive with it, tells you how to put batteries in it but provides no in-depth description of the functions provided by the device.
While this is supposed to be an entry level GPS, I think most entry level customers will find it confusing and not helpful on the trail. I will continue to carry it until it breaks, but I am not that impressed and knowing what it provides I wouldn't recommend it unless you just plan to use the trip computer and some primitive waypoint features. At its current price, I just don't see any really value in what it provides. I certainly won't be in the market for another Garmin product for a while.
How I most often use it: after the initial setup when I arrive at the trailhead/parking lot (or the bike path etc) I turn it on, clear current track, reset the trip odometer, then add a waypoint and that's it. Since I have it set to automatically record tracks there's nothing for me to do until I get to the end of the trail. At which point I then save the track and then use the backtrack feature to guide me back to the car/trail head.
This comes with a *very very* basic world map with only major cities (Los Angeles, San Diego etc) as landmarks so don't expect street names or shops, banks, gas stations, restaurants etc. But great for backpacking, hiking, biking and even as a backup for wheeling/offroading (though I use a tablet based GPS for that).
built tough and water resistant for hiking purpose, so no case needed. I dropped it 10' many times to rug and dirt, in a bathtub of water, without issue
Easy, fast single click marking of waypoints separate from tracks
Tracking is automatic and uses little memory
joystick & button navigation is easy to operate with gloves on
B&W screen great in sunlight
Power consumption is >=30% _less_ than color eTrex [ 10 draws 60mA; the 30 or 20 is 90 mA, no maps installed, lights off, GPS+GLONASS+WAAS ON and active satellites tracked]
If GPS alone is used, eTrex 10 draws only 45mA
easy to learn without a manual
improved accuracy via WAAS and GLONASS support, as close as 6' with waypoint averaging
Fast re-acquisition of satellites once initial acquisition is obtained
Upgraded to latest firmware via Garmin Express easily
Lots of support from Garmin website or 3rd party websites or blogs
Easy exporting data to Google Maps and Earth via BaseCamp
>50 continuous hours on 2x Lithium AA [ test batteries were not yet exhausted]
33 continuous hours with 2000mAH NiMH, 41 continuous hours if GPS only, GLONASS and WAAS OFF
No beeper or buzzer for alarms
B&W screen less sharp vs color but works in all lighting conditions
not enough documentation in the shipped manual
No clip or lanyard included
Note, most ads for the eTrex 10 state is has 'no memory'. What they mean is no memory to store maps, it has 7.5 MB/10MB free [ the rest is use by the system] to store tracks, waypoints, caches etc., onboard. You can store several 1000s of these as the data size is very small and by then, it gets unwieldy to search and manipulate.
Nothing more to buy beyond a belt clip Garmin Carabiner clip.
Top international reviews
So - it is ok for finding out exactly where you are, but it doesn't help if you want to be somewhere else - other than a vague direction.
You can place markers, and leave a trail of where you went, and see how fast, or how long it took.
You can not download extra maps to it.
There is no belt clip. You have to buy that as an extra.
What is good about it? It is small, light, waterproof, uses readily available AA batteries, and you can work it with gloves on.
Vom Support bekommt man lediglich 3 Infos:
Even though we had (and still occasionally have) problems with operating and trying to figure out how to works, I would still recommend it as a starter unit for anybody who wants a GPS unit.
Yet , your old eTrex is not to be thrown away as this product works finally like the one you have , updated in certain areas only , having some negative points elsewhere. The really new things to enjoy are the USB connection and the panning option - otherwise not available with the old eTrex. People are very correct however to protest for insufficient instructions ! Either you try to find everything on your own or ... you've had it !
The toggle switch is not as sensitive as it should be . You must learn how to use it , there is a delay of response too... you cannot use it always the way you'd expect to - this became my first surprise ; the old eTrex was using buttons only and was more positive although needed more manipulation. By the way the battery level indicator is just a fixed icon and measures nothing ! The old eTrex had by far a simpler and more effective one. Why ? Ask Garmin !
The GLONASS capture does not seem to enhance the integrity or coverage in central Europe while it eventually is adding up in error. The EGNOS assistance is welcomed but not adding anything improtant to performance , so far.
Hm... I paid less for this than the old eTrex ! That must be a positive point for all those who need such a type of GPS . If you buy for the first time , go for it , if you owe an old eTrex , think about what you really need to do with the new one as it might not worth the new spending
Only difficulty I’ve experienced was technology related (could be my own failing though not the actual product). It’s not easy to store a GPX file, I had to follow the dummy steps from an online forum as the ETrex did not come with a comprehensive user guide. First two attempts failed but persistence paid off as once downloaded the device kept me on the track very accurately.
This is a very basic model. I guess you get what you pay for. If I had known what I know now, I would probably have paid a little more for one with proper maps. However, that said, it does do the job and we have had a lot of fun with it. The accuracy of the device appears to be spot on. We have navigated successfully to geocaches even when there has been thick tree cover, which one might have expected to interfere with the satellite signal.
If you want a machine to home in on geocaches, it's fine. Used in conjunction with tablet or paper map it's just right for the job but by itself it's limited. If you want a machine for detailed navigation, forget it - you need to go seriously upmarket and buy something like a GPS + OS map bundle.
Update after 1 month - still 4 stars. Joystick sometimes doesn't make contact, a pain if you're in the middle of entering co-ords, otherwise OK. A good starter GPS to use with tablet or paper maps.
