Advanced Fitness Metrics
fēnix 2 is packed with training features to tell you about your form and fitness. The first is the VO2 max estimator. When used with a heart rate monitor¹, fēnix 2 crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute. Track changes to your VO2 max to see your fitness gains and to compare with your peers. Other fitness metrics include recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a Race Predictor, which estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number.
Running Dynamics Features
fēnix 2 incorporates sophisticated Garmin running watch feedback on your running form by reporting multiple metrics. When used with the HRM-Run monitor¹, fēnix 2 reports your cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time. These metrics are called running dynamics, and they effect your running economy.
Swim Profile and Ski-Board Mode
The fēnix 2 isn’t just for outdoor fitness; special feature sets help swim training and skiing too. Borrowing from the Garmin Swim™, fēnix 2 tracks your distance, pace, stroke count and more. You just tell fēnix 2 the size of the pool you’re swimming in and begin your workout. Ski-Board mode puts speed, distance, vertical drop and an automatic run counter (with Auto Pause for the lift line) and more at your fingertips. You can even use your fēnix 2 as a glove-friendly remote, via ANT+™, for the VIRB™ and VIRB Elite action cameras.
Navigate Your Way
No other navigator GPS plus ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) wristwatch offers you the combined training functions and our leading GPS technology. fēnix 2 provides comprehensive navigation and tracking functionalities as well as trip information to guide you on and off the beaten track. Its built-in sensors provide information on heading, elevation and weather changes. It’s built to endure the toughest outdoor conditions — and also makes a stylish day-to-day timepiece.
It records a track log creating a GPS “bread crumb trail” as you move. It also allows you to mark waypoints, such as a start/finish line, course check point, or a campsite, vehicle or other point of interest. With fēnix 2, you can create and follow routes, mark up to 1,000 waypoints and store up to 10,000 track points.
Plan trips and share adventures with friends and family using BaseCamp. fēnix is equipped with both ANT+ and Bluetooth® capabilities to wirelessly share tracks, waypoints, routes and geocaches with other compatible Garmin devices or smartphones.
Altimeter, Barometer and Compass
fēnix 2 is equipped with ABC sensors to provide relevant real-time information. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. The 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you’re moving or not.
fēnix 2 auto-calibrates its ABC sensors using its GPS receiver and also auto sets the time based on location. For an extremely accurate temperature reading, pair it with our tempe™ external temperature sensor.
Built to Endure the Roughest Conditions
fēnix 2 combines a strong housing to survive shocks with a curved mineral glass lens to resist scratching. It boasts a large LCD display with a red LED backlight and a robust polyurethane wristband. An alternate fabric wrist strap (with hook-and-loop fastener) is also included with your fēnix 2 to accommodate all wrist sizes and so you can strap it on top of a heavy jacket. fēnix 2 is water rated to 5 ATM (50 meters) and has a battery life of up to 50 hours in GPS mode (depending on settings) and up to 5 weeks in watch mode. Basic watch functions include alarms, tones, vibration alerts, timer, stopwatch and world clock with the ability to display several times zones at once.

However, there is definitely a hardware problem. The first watch I received I enjoyed for 5 days and decided to hit the pool during the weekend. I'm not talking about swimming or anything serious, just relaxing by the pool. As soon as I was in the pool and the watch got wet (no diving or jumping in, the pool is 4 feet deep :) ) the water got into it. I could immediately see the water bubble under the screen.
Ok, so I got a bit upset but thought I've got a defective one and returned it and Amazon gave me a new one. I was hesitant to try its water resistance capabilities since I moved away from the States and returning the item would be a problem. I used it for two weeks for running and on the bike without any problems. But yesterday I decided to test it since we are talking about a very expensive piece of sport equipment DESIGNED for swimming (along everything else) and I wanted to see if I actually could swim with it. I put it in the glass of water and guess what, after a couple of moments there was a nice big water bubble in my watch...
All things considered, this is definitely a defective design, very unfortunate for Garmin since the watch itself is very nice and a really good add-on for every sport amateur or pro athlete. There is no water resistance whatsoever, even sub $10 Casio watches are far more waterproof and they are not even designed for swimming. This would actually be ridiculous if it didn't set me back by $300... Suunto watches are much more sturdy and factory tested... Such a pity.
So, to recap, the watch is beautiful and has a lot of features, if you only run/hike/bike with it definitely worth considering, but keep it far away from water. Declaring it is designed for swimming is either a lie or their manufacturing process quality is low. Either way, nothing you would expect when paying a lot of money for a Garmin product. I would recommend looking at other brands/models.
Attached are a pictures of both of the watches.
UPDATE 8/9/15: I returned the watch to Garmin Croatia and they gave me a new one under warranty. This one likes the water very much and I am finally enjoying the watch as I should. Thanks Garmin Croatia!
Swimming with the watch is fun, although it looses GPS signal every once in a while, but that's expected.
The good: price point (half the cost of a fenix 3), fairly accurate GPS and HRM, decent battery life, ability to configure data displays for individual activities, short learning curve for field use, decent GPS functionality (waypoints, etc), lots of ways to set alarms and alerts, works with ant+ devices. Altimeter, barometer, and compass all easy to use. Has eighty or ninety percent of base Fenix 3 functionality at less than half the cost.
The bad: Bluetooth connectivity is unusable (iOS 71. and 9.3), bluetooth and ant+ can't be used at the same time, screen resolution makes map display unintelligable, doesn't do indoor fitness activities well (collects data like "ascent" that makes no sense on a rowing maching, for example).
The really bad: the Basecamp and Connect websites are hard to use, not terribly helpful for data analysis and syncing even through a cable (using Garmin Express) is flakey and unpredictable. More importantly, this is an orphaned product. It is unclear that Garmin will do much more in the way of bug fixing or feature upgrades.
Summary: Three stars due to the sync'ing, bluetooth and software problems. Would get four stars otherwise given the price and feature combination, which is hard to beat.
If you want a deeper review, there are lots of web reviews, DCRainmaker is one particularly thorough reviewer.
I had event gone through the trouble of making a video for the support tech to watch where you can clearly see that I was about 15 miles into my run. [...]
I wish Garmin would have just realized that this would not be something easy to troubleshoot and sent me a new watch.
