His incredible story, in his own words.
One of Hollywood’s all-time great leading men, James Garner enjoyed a remarkable career spanning six decades, and whether you know him as Bret Maverick or Jim Rockford, his appeal bridges generations. Few know the real story, now told in this intimate memoir of growing up in Depression-era Oklahoma and triumphing in Hollywood.
After physical abuse at the hands of his stepmother, Garner left home at fourteen. He was Oklahoma’s first draftee of the Korean War, receiving two Purple Hearts for combat wounds. Back in Los Angeles in need of a job, Garner reluctantly tried acting and was surprised to find his career taking off. Working with such luminaries as Julie Andrews, Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen, and Clint Eastwood, he became a star in his own right. He threw himself into his work, and despite stage fright and bouts of depression, constant physical pain and epic battles with the Hollywood establishment, he became the acting equivalent of a national monument.
Written with Jon Winokur, The Garner Files is a wry, engaging self-portrait chronicling the vagaries of a screen career along with the cast of personal and professional characters that helped shape a great American life.

""The Garner Files" is a classic tale of making it in Hollywood fueled...with Garner's good looks, fortune, charm, and sense of humor."
--ChristianScienceMonitor.com
"[an] enjoyable memoir...there's plenty to love in this book. Garner...has a knack for telling a story and finding the perfect quote to tie it all together...charming...[It] resembles a conversation with an old friend who loves to tell colorful stories."
--PublishersWeekly.com
"Garner follows his own heroic dictum: Plenty of self-deprecating, humor, a general air of live-and-let-live, but when it comes down to it, no pulled punches. For Garner fans, 'The Garner Files' is catnip...it is a fine, frank and fun collection."
--LOS ANGELES TIMES
"Garner tells his life story with the same wry, self-effacing charm that characterized his classic TV characters: the laidback cowboy Bret Maverick and the down-on-his-heels gumshoe Jim Rockford...Garner comes across as likable on the page as he does on screen."
--"Kirkus Reviews"
"If you buy one cranky celebrity memoir this fall, might we suggest James Garner's "The Garner Files"?"
--TheAtlanticWire.com
"James Garner stepped into two of TV's most calcified genres -- the western and the detective series -- and set a new standard that others have been chasing down since...having made up his mind to write [a memoir]...Garner follows his own heroic dictum: Plenty of self-deprecating, humor, a general air of live-and-let-live, but when it comes down to it, no pulled punches. For Garner fans, "The Garner Files" is catnip...[Garner] is unfailingly candid about his own desires...it is a fine, frank and fun collection."
--"Los Angeles Times"
"James Garner's memoir is as easygoing and plain-spoken as his acting persona...[He] wouldn't have it any other way."
--USAToday.com
"Laid-back charm and a sense of humor fuel such memories, two qualities shared by the characters Garner often played in a career of 50-plus years...Full of funny stories and observations, "The Garner Files" offers the kind of clubhouse banter you might expect from a hardworking, successful guy who doesn't take himself too seriously -- and doesn't want you to, either."
--"Associated Press"
"Stand aside for Maverick! Stand aside again for Jim Rockford!...Let this neatly written and well-supplemented little book--all of [Garner's] friends provide relevant stories and fond judgments--set a new standard of integrity for the genre...You could hand this book as a primer on ethics to any young man just reaching the age of choosing his way in life."
--Clive James, "The Atlantic"

Julie Andrews writes the introduction to this memoir. She lets the reader know just who James Garner is and he is a sweetheart, over and above all else. So much so, she tells us twice.
James Garner follows with a quick note to the reader proving he is everything Julie Andrews said he was.
The book begins with Garner's background in Norman, Oklahoma, a small place in the middle of the country. His childhood was filled with turmoil and, like many of that time, he began working away from home at fourteen. The next part of the history takes us from Korea to Broadway to Maverick and the Big Screen. There are full chapters devoted to racing, politics and golf as well as acting and producing.
Jim, as everyone calls him, is open and very willing to call a spade a spade. (Old country saying referring to the difference between a spade and a shovel ;-) ) The reader will discover Jim has only been in love with one woman, Lois, and loves many more. He is faithful as a husband and a friend, loyal, honest, and good for his word as well as generous. Jim will be the first to tell you he drank too much at one time, smoked too much for far too long and has a temper which is mellowing with age. The reader will discover who he liked, who he didn't like, who he thought was professional and who he thought was more trouble than they were worth. And just as he was in life, Jim is not afraid to throw a punch or two in this book.
Among other things, the book covers a bit on how the studios tended to work against the actors, some of the best places to play golf, and what it was like to race in the Baja 1000. Most the stories are funny or entertaining, though some like the time Jim was beaten up in a traffic altercation were downright sad.
James Garner has lived his life to the fullest, often doing his own stunt work. Because of this, he has been in a lot of pain most of his later adult life. I heard him once say, on television that he was separating from his wife because his pain was causing him to be hard to live with. He mentions this is the book. He also mentions the use of cannabis for the pain. (Mr. Garner, if you're listening, L.E.A.P. -Law Enforcement Against Prohibition could use your endorsement and/or help!). Didn't I say he was a straight shooter?
At the end of the book Garner gives his take on the movies, television shows, and miniseries he has done. I still remember the paper cut in 36 Hours and how I knew it would some how be important later in the film, even at the tender age of eleven, so I agree with Garner's take on this film and many others. There are several photographs included at the end that I found interesting.
James Garner always looked like he was playing himself, as if he wasn't acting at all. He will be the first to tell you he worked hard to achieve that look. He brought a whole new feel to the Western hero and the modern day detective, making the whole world take notice. I am only one in millions of fans who will always be grateful to him for making these successful along with his writers, to whom Garner gives much of the credit. We all noticed and because he made it look like he was just being himself, millions of people thought they knew him personally.
My take:
Of course I loved reading the book since it was by and about one of my few heartthrobs most of which are fictional characters. (And NO, I still don't like to read Romance!) But here are some things, you, my dear reader can take to heart.
The first half of the first chapter got off to a rocky start. My grandma wrote a book called `This is My Life', where there was too much I did this and I did that without enough story to make you feel engaged in the book. While the Garner Files start this way, it does move into a more interesting mode of writing soon and the reader won't be disappointed if they stay with the book. By the time the chapter three rolls onto the scene, the writing style and story telling are completely engaging.
The manner in which the book is laid out, with chapters covering different aspects of James Garner's life, helped me not only follow the telling of this life story but also helped me see how truly diverse the man is.
I found the honesty in the book refreshing right down to those print underwear he wore to the hospital. Because Jim has laid out his thoughts in such an open manner within the pages of the book, I almost felt like I knew him...almost but not quite. His shyness does come through. I enjoyed learning how he saw things and because I am older, I can remember many of the people he refers to in the book. This increased my enjoyment of the book.
This is a must read for anyone who is a fan or even just fond of James Garner and a recommended read for everyone else.
Considering Garner by average standards is a pretty normal guy, one might figure this book would be boring and fairly lackluster. However, I found it interesting and even sort of funny at times. The truth is Garner isn't full of himself. He had a rough upbringing having lost his mother at the age of 4 and found himself being raised by relatives until his hard drinking father reunited the family after his marriage to the shrew of all stepmothers.
As the first Oklahoman drafted during the Korean War, Garner managed to earn two Purple Hearts which he didn't receive until 1983. He also described life in the army which included wrecked knees and WWII turkeys. After he returned to civilian life, he landed in Hollywood and mediocre jobs until he got the idea that he'd give acting a shot. From that point on, the book picks up with stories about his encounters with the famous, soon to be famous, and up and coming contemporaries such as Clint Eastwood who would work their way up through the ranks starting with bit parts and leads on low budget tv shows.
While this book is crammed with anecdotes about his career and family, one of the most interesting sections relates to his career as an indentured slave on the Warner's lot as the "star" of tv's Maverick. Garner's recollections of the tyrannical Jack Warner and his underlings and the unbelievable pay structure as the title actor on a hit series were shocking yet not all that surprising as they echoed things I had read that occurred there in the previous two decades. I found myself cheering for Garner when the situation finally reversed itself to the point where he was able to earn a realistic salary and support his family much to the chagrin of the dreadful Jack Warner.
Above and beyond the truly interesting info, Garner gets into his problem knees, open heart surgery, and a 50 year pot habit to relieve pain. Nothing exactly explosive, but the myriad of physical ailments which occurred on the set of the Rockford Files ultimately brought the show down. Garner just couldn't handle the physical stress.
This memoir is a treasure trove of recollections that have occurred over Garner's 50+ years in Hollywood and in many ways is a time capsule that reflects the changes that have occurred in the entertainment industry over Garner's lengthy career. I found it enjoyable in a historical sense, but Garner's flair for story telling is the element that made this book immensely enjoyable for me. This book was well organized and its chronological order made it easy to follow and cross reference.

Tom Selleck: "I took Jim's (Garners) advice and it worked (...) it changed my life - in the new script, Magnum was not a superhero. He's a though guy as Rockford was, but he was reluctant. That's all from Jim"
Auch wer kein absoluter Englisch-Spezi ist, dürfte mit der leicht verständlichen Schreibe klarkommen... Als Schmankerl befindet sich im Mittelteil eine große Anzahl von z.T. privaten Fotos Garnes...
One Word: Kaufen!
Zum Schluss nochmal James Garner:
"So If anyobdy asks, "How do you want to be remembererd?" I tell them:
"With a smile."
So long Jimbo!
