Runs at almost the same high frequency too. Lacks the waterproof electronics box of the AT but the coil is waterproof. Picks up tiny bits of metal and sorts by metal type.
I don't have an AT to compare it to but watching ''Diggers'' episodes shows the AT working seemingly identically. My wife was very excited to see the show and know what the sounds mean! She knows that feeling when the sweet high pitch ping sound rings out.
The instructional videos are very informative. You can view them on the garrett site.
Hint, the pinpoint function is very useful. But having a good pinpointer while digging is hugely helpful!
We love that Garrett is made in the USA too.
Air testing with nuggets demonstrated a minimum of 1 gram in size at a depth of about 4.
The discrimination settings are fantastic and make it a turn on and go detector. Learning it has been fun and I get better with target ID each time I go out. I love being able to isolate a junk target and reject it. It still pops up on the display but the sound isn't there to distract you from your hunting. The depth indicator is fairly accurate too. I have had it alert me to 2 coins on top of each other with 2 inches depth difference. Nice.
If I could improve this unit it would be its performance in salt water or salty wet sands. It sounds off randomly and repeatedly in salt watery conditions so the sensitivity has to be reduced greatly. I have not had much success - any in fact - in salt water and would recommend not using this device if that is your primary hunting ground.
Dry sands / ground and fresh water have not given me any problems, in fact I followed a guy on a beach who had a 9 inch coil on his shooter and found a pocket drop of quarters ($1.75) that he walked right over and completely missed.
I will NOT trade mine when it comes time to buy a salt water shooter if that tells you anything. It's too good to let go of.
1st timers, coin and relic hunters - you won't go wrong with this unit.
