Micara Lee is leading a crusade to save Sweet Home from land developers. She is about to lock up from the city hall meeting when she meets Garrett Hearth whose family is one of the towns founders. They begin seeing each other and a relationship ensues. Can Micara help guide Garrett back to his faith?
Garrett Hearth has lost his faith in God and is angry and bitter that his life did not take the path he had chosen. He is ready to sell his land, cash in, and get out of Sweet Home for good. Garrett can't let go of the past and the injustices he believes God should have saved him from so he could have lived his dreams of playing college and professional football and marrying his high school sweetheart. When he meets Micara Lee at city hall he is surprised that sparks fly.
This was basically a nice story but I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I think Garrett's 'woe is me' attitude went on too long and became redundant and it would have been really nice if we had some background on Gabe, why is he a single parent? When did the problems for his son begin? Why the distance between the two brothers? I felt I was left without some important background information so that I could adequately understand where they were coming from.
The book certainly has a good message that we all should follow. God knows the plans He has for us. We don't, so therefore we need to have faith that He will give us what is best for us if we allow Him to.
I do recommend this book and I will be reading the next in the series with hope that Gabe's background will be forthcoming.
Reading Garrett reinforced to me the importance of not trying to tackle life's battles (which will invariably arise) on our own. It reminded me about the benefits of taking a moment to "check in" with the Lord before dealing with particularly precarious issues, and even better, to approach Him through prayer as a couple.
Morrow's leading lady, Micara, sets a great example of seeking God's help through prayer, but also in learning not just to pray for the desired outcome, but for God to put His plan in place and our experiencing peaceful adjustment to it.
This book inspired me on a personal level to ask for God's guidance as my husband and I pulled into a parking space at the hospital where we would be visiting my mother-in-law to break the news to her that her condition was going to drastically change life as she had known it. We anticipated a natural negative reaction. Frankly, we were expecting the worst. Having just read Garrett, I felt a spiritual nudge to take my husband's hand and say, "Let's pray about this before we go in." He eagerly agreed, and holding hands, we prayed for God to give us the right words to explain and comfort her, and our prayers were miraculously answered.
Inspirational fiction such as Garrett not only takes us on an entertaining excursion, but also gives us those little mini-pushes that help us grow in the Lord. This tale of life challenges in the small Texas town of Sweet Home will make you smile as you travel miles toward realizing or recalling that there really is a Plan. And you will enjoy the journey!
I don't know if this scripture was in the forefront of the author's mind when she wrote GARRETT, but it was certainly the verse that resonated in my mind as I read her first novel. Though the female character, Micara, is not married, it is apparent that she knows this verse and allows it to be a guiding force in her interactions with those around her. In particular, her hearfelt interactions with the male character, Garrett, provide a pathway for his spiritual healing from a disappointing past. GARRETT presents a "sweet" story of ordinary people living in a "sweet" town learning to walk by faith and trust God's direction. I look forward to see what directions God will lead them in the next Sweet Home novel!
