Western New York has now entered the dark and witty world of Hiassen's Florida! With his "Gastrodetective" Frank Bruno, and a memorable cast of characters, Vincent McConeghy has taken this far corner of the State, known previously for its misfortunes in football and winter weather, and relocated as one of the comic centers of the US. I spoiled the book for my husband by insisting on reading large portions out loud, when I wasn't wiping the tears of laughter from my eyes.
I can only hope that McConeghy is cooking up another plot for Frank, while I go in search of his restaurants in Niagara Falls.

Gastro Detective marks the advent of a new genre for the fiction thriller category-the Resto Thriller- where food, finance, global politics and the recurring drama of the restaurant business collide with dramatic and unexpected consequences.
Chef Joe Bass, owner of a celebrated regional restaurant and well-known television personality on Food Network, has been murdered in the kitchen of his eponymous restaurant. His sudden and unexpected demise prompts the return of life-long friend Frank Bruno, who is also immersed in a high-level facet of the food industry for the U.S. government, far beyond the machinations of sole proprietorship.
Yet, as the nitty-gritty of a return to life in the restaurant business envelopes him, Frank Bruno is reminded that the fundamentals of food, family and restaurants remain the same.
It’s a hands-on business where everyone’s hands are dirty.
Author Vincent McConeghy’s piercing debut novel draws upon a successful twenty-year career in the foodservice industry.
Gastro Detective has been described as: “One helluva of a great read. Fast paced; a page turner that keeps you hungry for more. A rollicking tale of the toughest business of them all – the restaurant business.” Eric Salzman, MonkeyBuisnessBlog.com

As a chef, I though Gastro Detective had such a promising premise. Gastro + thriller??? Sign me up! But no. Characters were all harsh and unlikeable and the plot was just weird and unoriginal and it ended kind of abruptly, as though even the author wanted to be done with it. Honestly this read like a rushed writing assignment that barely passed. Disappointing.

This book, from an unknown author, completely took me by surprise. And delightfully so. One never knows what to expect from an indie writer but McConeghy grabbed me from the opening chapter and I was hooked.
The book bills itself as a "Resto Thriller" - a suspense set in the restaurant industry. But what I found fascinating was how the author was able to bring together things that are happening right now in the global economy right down to the local level - food inflation, the China play in Africa and the intersection between what we eat and where we eat.
The book is set in Niagara Falls, NY but it could be anytown USA. I loved. It's authentic.

Vince has seen it all & has finally decided to share some. This is a great story mixed with an inside look at what happens behind the scenes of your favorite restaurant. It's a good page turner with alot of twists that keep you thinking. There's something here that will hit home for everyone.

I don't know what I enjoyed more, the intriguing character of Frank Bruno or the setting of Niagara Falls, but I found this book a great read. A great book for a Sunday afternoon.

This was a great read - interesting bits in information added and some quirky mystery situations. Was an attention holding story and I was sorry to finish it.

McConeghy's new novel is everything I love in a book - fast, funny, foul, filthy, familiar, foreign, and fascinating. Who knew that the story of a murder in a little restaurant in provincial Niagara Falls could flow so easily across the Atlantic to an audience with the Pope himself? The characters are memorable, authentic, and recognizable without being stereotypes, which is an accomplishment in the world these people inhabit. Even if you're not a foody, the historical background about Niagara Falls is worth it to anyone who's been there. I want McConeghy to write another novel focusing on the connections between food, money, and politics - a truly interesting and original stew he brews here. Open a bottle of Gigondas, fill your glass, then sit back and laugh yourself drunk. Enjoy!
