Traci Robison continues to show attention to every detail and writing mastery in the latest book of the Tales of Malstria. This novel is set in the time Alexander the Great was taking over the known world. Robison goes into details from flowers and tress to how people cleanse themselves in a desert. From what I know about Alexander's time, the details are accurate and well researched.
As with The Taking (the first book in the Tales of Malstria), I enjoyed the subtle foreshadowing and hints of the true nature behind the characters. When Robison reveals those natures, I was left with jaw-dropping surprise, even though I knew something big was coming. Robison has a way of personalizing narrators to the reader in a way that gives the reader space contemplate what circumstances lead basically good people to make atrocious decisions.
This novel is full of adventure, so get ready to sail the seas, fight impossible battles, and fall in love.
So for the story line: A slave becoming a priest has a very powerful father. His father forsakes the son in his time of need and dooms the slave to a life of darkness in the mines. After much suffering, the slave becomes a fighter and treasured priest by joining a band of mercenaries who fight against Alexander the Great. The slave's downfall is falling in love.
I'm looking forward to seeing where Robison goes with her next novel in this series.
