Buy an extra for safety, because the first will be a lemon...

THE FIRST PARAGRAPH IS AN UPDATE (2/14/10)FOR A REVIEW SEVERAL MONTHS AGO

This tablet just lost it's LCD backlight, 25 days or so after the warranty expired. Luckily it looks as though I can get it repaired locally in Dallas (for $200-$300 it seems) so I won't have to have the HD wiped clean and then have to reinstall all my software.

This is the third - scratch that - fourth Gateway Tablet PC I've purchased. Two are replacements for two that had to be sent to Gateway for repairs under warranty.

The computers work very well for my business, but unfortunately, when one goes down under warranty (not a matter of if, but when) it can take up to a month (including shipping time back and forth) before it is returned. No matter what the problem, the hard drive is wiped clean, and you'll have to start over. A killer for a business.

I had to spend about $1000 the first time it happened - the tablet was the only computer I had in my business, so I had to buy another one while it was in "the shop" getting it's power supply replaced. Got it back working just fine, but now it was an extra machine that sat for another 14 months in a closet because I didn't have use for a second computer.

Gateway doesn't have a loaner program, rentals or any type of customer service regarding warranty repairs whatsoever. In the two most recent cases (one that malfunctioned one day after purchase, and one that started 7 days afterward, but was diagnosed as a software problem for a few weeks) I paid for all shipping, cleanup and everything else. This last time I ended up with a machine that was 32 days old, and therefore could not be returned for a refund.

Pretty Awesome

Before I ever got a Wacom tablet this was my next best choice in getting an all in one. I fly a lot between family and this was the best thing I got myself for work/pleasure purposes. I am a artist and this laptop was pretty on spot for doing what it does. I had a Toshiba tablet pc first and fell in love with tablets from then on but I wanted to move on and try another. I have upgraded the laptop over time to keep up with the times on software changes and that's been over the course of 4 years now. It has kept up with all changes to be honest. I went from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit and like I said it still works like a champ! BUT I do agree with the warranty thing I think all computers like to stroke out when the warranty is up and out no exception to this one either.

Pros: Very upgradable despite what I have been told about it. Pen pressure is wonderful! The pen itself is comfortable. The screen is bright. The rotation of the screen is cool I love the lock feeling you get when its rotated around to flip the screen. The pen garage is in a pretty good location. Never have had any problems with mouse touch pad vs the Wacom penable screen and pen usage. Speed is fine for the 3D applications I use. It handles Maya very well and if it can handle Maya I say its dang well worth it.

Cons: I hate the fact it heats ups pretty well even though it has an elevated battery bottom, I still needed a cooling mate for it. It mainly heats up around the bottom of the screen near the power button and the pivot point but once its on the cooling mate it goes away. My bluetooth and speakers died out but I never used the bluetooth so what the heck I can careless as long ad the Wacom functions works, but the speaks on the other hand I have had them replaced a few times (right before the warranty was up and after it was up)no use now I gave up, so I just use headphones now. Sometimes the CD drive is slow/clunky but nothing to be up in a bunch over.

I had to have to screen rotation pivot replaced but that was my fault I used this on a daily basis (nearly all day) so that was to be expected. Despite all my screw ups to it this is a pretty tough tablet and I love it, just would like to update the graphics card on it but if you're a computer geek you know how hard that can be if at all possible.

I wish tablet pc's were more popular so more would be made but just tablets are taking over so there is nothing I can do about that. If I think I missed anything I will update my comment on this product, happy hunting to those who are looking for that perfect pc!

Great artists companion!

I purchased this laptop when I was a senior in high school back in 2007 and literally took this laptop everywhere I went. It survived being stuffed in a high schoolers nightmare of a backpack, being thrown into the backseat of a car, shoved in carry-on luggage for long cross-country flights and even went to college with me. I used this laptop exclusively for it's wacom penabled capabilities. I am a digital illustrator and found that this laptop met my needs and then some! I definitely liked being able to draw on-screen compared to an external tablet where you had to look up at your screen while drawing (unless you get a Cintiq). At the time of purchase, my laptop was running Vista, but I easily upgraded it to Windows 7 64 bit without any issues. I run Adobe Photoshop constantly and only just recently did I notice my laptop having a hard time keeping up (I started with PS 7 and now run CS5). I also constantly swiveled the screen to convert it into tablet mode for drawing and note-taking in class.

My laptop is 5 years old and is finally kicking the bucket. But I put it through hell and back and most definitely tested all its limits! I'll miss my laptop when it's gone, it was a great Tablet PC and I definitely recommend it!

great long lasting computer

I've had this computer since it came out. I've used it for practically everything in my life. The combination of a tablet and a pc is genius if you ask me. Having the convenience of having both in one product makes it so wonderful to own. The weight is a little on the heavy side but compared to the qualities it has, it doesn't bother me that much. Since day 1 this computer had been great. wish companies would invest in producing more tablet pcs now a days.
