This author is just filthy. As filthy as people really are. He grosses me out (I am not easily grossed out). But I love his work. His writing can bring tears to your eyes -- real ones, not sentimental ones. I think about some of these stories for days and days after reading them and rereading them. But jeez .... the guy has a turn for saying stuff I really don't want to think about.
The sweetest story in here is "Given." I really think everyone who is older (like than 50) and is truly in love with their partner should read this. Sorry to give it away but his wife dies before the story starts. But he keeps her there so beautifully. And the daughter is beautifully drawn. This is the kind of writing you take pictures of pages or passages with your iphone and send to friends and spend hours rethinking after you reread them. I'd start quoting right now but you should buy the book. Give it some time. And just try to get past his absolute fixation with erections (horses, dogs, nice men, gross men paying for sex, guys in jail -- basically anyone who can manage it -- they're all erect in here [or in Quick, another of his books] somewhere). But read anyway because you will find writing that beats just like human hearts do. This fiction is real.
